Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

A cold and windy day is on tap for Friday, but the groom should be stellar. Classic skiers and groom carvers will be delighted. Wax: green, according to Teacup. Warmer temps are in the offing for Saturday, and a snowstorm moves in late Saturday night into Sunday. The long range forecast can still be described as “awesome” – cold temps stick around, and waves of precipitation add to the snowpack.

Friday is perfectly clear and will stay that way. The free air freezing level will be 0′ all day long with single-digit temps in the morning and low 20’s in the afternoon. Dress for the wind chill this morning: easterlies at 25kts drop to E/S 15 in the afternoon and turn to W 15 overnight.

Saturday will be sunny all day long. Clouds arrive in the evening, and snow starts up a couple hours before midnight. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and back to 0′ in the evening. About 0.2” to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast Saturday night for 2-3” new snow.

Sunday will be snowy most of the day and will turn to snow flurries and clear sky late afternoon into the night. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ after midnight. About 0.6-0.8” WE is forecast. That’s 6-9” dry powder. Wind: WSW 30-40 in the morning, NW 30-40 (could affect some lifts) midday, and W 35-40 (just fine) in the afternoon. The wind drops to S 5-15 overnight.

Monday starts clear or high cloudy and quickly adds light snowfall. This is a similar setup to a few days ago. Reality could overperform. For now, we’re looking at at least half a foot of dry, fluffy powder over the 24 hour period. The snow level remains low at least through the end of the week and possibly a lot longer. Yes!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
