Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s First Friday, and the general picture for today has increasing (but gusty) westerlies late in the day. We start with an upper low off the coast. That will move north during the day, allowing offshore pressure to rise. A heat low forms in the desert this afternoon, and a weak front moves inland. Minus the front (which will likely decrease wind quality), those are all good things.

So, we’ll start with 5-10 in the west and 10-13 east of Hood River. The wind will build to gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles by noon and hold for a couple hours, strongest anywhere but the Hatchery. As the desert heat really fires up mid-afternoon, the wind will build to gusty 26-30, probably most consistent at Stevenson, Avery, and Arlington, but windy everywhere else too.

We’ll be between systems on Saturday with not a whole lot in the way of gradients. The wind will be confined to areas west of The Dalles all day. It’ll start with 5-10 and slowly build to 13-16 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. There’s a chance of 17-20 late in the day for the Stevenson to The Dalles stretch.

Sunday starts out calm as pressures equalize across the Cascades. The wind will build to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier mid-afternoon, possibly picking up to gusty 21-25 late in the day from Stevenson to The Dalles. Monday currently looks like 27-31.

BONUS: Jones Friday: 7-10. Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: 24-27. Sauvie’s Friday: W 10. Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: 8-11+. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: SW 20/SW 10/X, SW swell 3′ at 15 seconds. Saturday: 5-10/5-10/20-25, SW 3′ @ 14. Sunday: 5/5/10, SW 3′ @ 13.

Road and Mountain Biking

High Prairie down to 450 is open, according to Strava. I received a report from Dirty Fingers that multiple known people have ridden Gunsight. Hospital Hill now seems to be a one-tick-bite-per-ride zone. That’s for humans, not for dogs, which are currently allowed, by the way. The now-open Borderline (133) trail in Post has 1-3” dust on it. SAD! We are at Fire Level 2 now, which means motos on Hood River County land are only allowed in Post Canyon. Middle Mountain and Pinemont are closed to motorized use until the fire level drops.

Upcoming Events

Tonight is First Friday in Hood River. This morning is the Kicskstand run at 7am, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a cup of coffee and a donut. Mountian View has a group mountain bike ride at 5pm tonight.
There are free kite demos from both Windance and Big Winds tomorrow at the Event Site and Sandbar. Windance’s kite demos continue through Sunday. Northwave has a free jibing and rigging clinic for windsurfers at 9 tomorrow, Pacific Hermitage has a garden work party starting at 10:30, and the HRATS have a trail work party at Post Canyon’s Family Man at 9 – bring loppers and brush-cutting tools to that one. There’s a group road bike ride from Mountain View Cycles at 9am. Trout Lake has the wild woman 50k and trail relay tomorrow, and if that’s too long for you, there’s a group trail run in Post Canyon at 8.

On Sunday, Big Winds has free demos of Faraday E-bikes. There’s free yoga at 9am at Samadhi, all-ages touch rugby at 11am at the Hood River Marina, and free art classes for kids (with parents!) at the Columbia Art Gallery at 1 (gotta sign up in advance).
