Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Friday! We’re starting off with quite a bit of wind this morning – mid to upper 20’s near Viento and Swell and also east of Maryhill. Gradients supporting this Dawn Patrol weigh in at .16 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc). River flow is 118kcfs this morning, and river temp is 68ish degrees. If the GFS is correct, Dawn Patrol will be the strongest wind of the day.

While that’s the model prediction, I think we’ll see solid wind all day long. Let’s call it 24-27 from Viento to Mosier early with 10-13 west of Viento, 15-18 near Lyle, and 20-23 from Maryhill to Arlington. Wind east of John Day Dam will slowly fade to 10-13 today. The Avery to Maryhill stretch will back off to 18-22. That leaves us with the tricky Stevenson to The Dalles stretch of river. The GFS thinks we’ll back off to 20-23 by noon. This feels extreme to me, given the clouds and gradients and predicted high temps on the west side. I’m going for a peak of 25-28 Viento to Doug’s by noon, then fading to 21-24 this afternoon, with Stevenson picking up from 10-13 to 18-22 when the clouds burn off.

Saturday sees a weak disturbance move through, and that’s creating some model disagreement. We start the day with 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River. The wind will pick up to gusty 21-24 in the afternoon (GFS says 18-22) from Stevenson to The Dalles and 5-10 or less east of The Dalles. I think Swell may be the loser on Saturday with gusty 16-19 after a brief hour or two of steadier wind. Sunday sees high pressure build over the region as another heat wave kicks off. At best, we’ll have light east wind at 10-15 near Stevenson midday with calm wind everywhere else. Monday looks similar, with a slight chance of light westerlies late in the day under 100 degree temps.

BONUS: Jones Friday: 21-24. Saturday: 19-22. Sunday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 11-14. Sunday: 9-12. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: 20-25/25-30/35+, NW swell 4′ @ 7 seconds. Saturday: 15-20/20-25/30+, NW 6′ @ 7. Sunday: 20-25/15-20/probably light S, NW 4′ @ 8 seconds.
