When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hi skiers and snowboarders! Looks like a decent day up there for groom, parks and Nordic. Red wax today, if you were wondering. Snow conditions are wet pack with scattered slushy areas; the snow did not refreeze last night. For the weekend, we’ll have a bit of snow on Saturday. Sunday brings fluctuating snow level with some snow and a potential period of rain below 6000′ or so. Next week starts out dry. From Wednesday on, we’re looking at snow piling up on the mountain with the snow level hovering pretty close to 5000′. That’s “base-building snow”…

Today: no snow piling up. It’ll be dry all day. The free air freezing level will be 9000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ overnight. Clouds persist all day. That’s followed by a clear period overnight and clouds again after midnight. Temps max out in the mid to upper 40s. Wind: light SW early, SSW 15-25 this evening, and S 15-25 overnight.

Light rain Saturday morning transitions to light snow mid-morning. The snow level will be 10,000′ early and 4000′ from late morning on. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) falls during the day for 1-2” wet snow. Same overnight, although the snow will be slightly less dense. Call it 2”. Wind: S 15-25 early builds to SW 20-40 mid-morning and turns to WSW 35-40 in the afternoon. Overnight, we’ll have SW 10-20.

Sunday sees the snow level bounce around from 4000′ early to 6500′ in the afternoon to 4000′ after midnight. We’ll see snow, then rain, then snow. Total precip looks to be about 0.6” WE. How much snow? A few inches at 5000′, and the rest rain? Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, SW 25-45 in the afternoon, WSW 35-40 in the evening, and W 35 after midnight.

Dry weather Monday daytime gives way to rain Monday night into Tuesday. Predicting the timing of these systems is impossible this far out. Generally speaking, the weather remains warm on Tuesday and then turns cooler from next Wednesday onward. If the extended models are correct, there’s quite a bit of that dense base-building snow in our future from Wednesday onward. Fingers crossed. Have a great day on the slopes today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Easterlies are in the cards for today through Monday. There’s a chance we could see some west wind on Tuesday, but things will have to line up just right. Fingers crossed! For Friday, Iwash (Rooster) starts with 45mph, holds through noon or so, then fades to 25mph. Stevenson starts with 15-20mph, rises to 25-30mph, and then fades to 25mph in the afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 108-174kcfs, river temp is 45.68F, and high temp forecast is 45F with increasing clouds.

Saturday starts with 50mph at Iwash and 35mph at Stevenson. It doesn’t last long. By mid-morning, Stevenson drops to 15mph and Iwash drops to 25-30mph. In the afternoon, Stevenson falls to 10mph and Iwash turns to W 10-15mph. High temp: 43F with rain. Sunday brings easterlies at 25mph or so at both Iwash and Stevenson all day long. That’ll be accompanied by rain. High temp: 43F under cloudy sky. Easterlies continue Monday. We’ll have a shot at west wind Tuesday. Maybe. Have fun out there!

Cycling Update

Trails have been a mix of frozen, hoar-frost (unrideable), and freeze-thaw. When it’s wet and muddy, or when there are freeze-thaw conditions, please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
