Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hi skiers, riders, and Nordic folks! Thursday was another day of deicing on the mountain, and it was also another day of snowpack building. As of the time of this forecast, Meadows had picked up another 9” of very wet snow – 1.2” water equivalent (WE). Models suggest the snow will switch to mixed precip overnight as temps on the west side rise to +6C and temps on the east side rise to +2C. We’ll then see several days where the snow level hovers right around the base of Meadows and Timberline. Down lower, trapped cold air may lead to freezing rain. Hard to say right now. Depends on where cold air gets trapped and for how long. In other words… lots of uncertainty going forward. Be prepared for deicing at the resorts, and be kind to them for the efforts they are making to stay open for you.

For Friday, expect either very light intermittent precipitation or a completely dry day. Probably dry. The snow level will bounce around some as the air masses compete. Models suggest the free air freezing level (FAF) will be around 8500′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. No measurable precip unless something changes. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning turning to S 10-15 in the afternoon and fading to S 5-10 overnight.

Saturday looks dry all day with perhaps a trace of rain, snain, or wet snow overnight. The FAF will be around 6500′ during the day. The snow level will be around 5500′ after midnight. Up to 0.1” WE is forecast overnight for a mix of rain and wet snow. Wind: S 10-15 all day. SW 10-15 overnight. Sunday sees 850mb (5000′ or so) temps at +2C in the morning, +3C in the afternoon, and +2C overnight. Models suggest the snow level will bounce around some between 5000′ and 6000′. About 0.5” WE is forecast during the day. Call that mixed precip with 2-3” wet snow at 5000′ and more up high. Lower down: probably rain but potentially freezing rain. Wind: SW 10-15 early, WSW 20-25 from midday on, and S 10-15 overnight. Monday’s forecast currently calls for sprinkles followed by mixed precip overnight. That’s all for now. Have a great day on the slopes!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
