Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Friday, and what you see is what you get on the mountain: sunshine and perfect, 10/10 groom. We’ll add a couple inches of snow to that Saturday afternoon into the evening, and then we’ll move into a long period of dry weather. Conditions start out cold and sunny next week and slowly transition to above-freezing and sunny. Will it be enough for a transition to granular conditions and corn snow? We’ll see what this low-angle sun can do!

Looking at Friday morning, we have a chilly start: teen temps with cold packed pow under clear sky. Groom report: 10/10. Sun sticks around all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) rises from 0′ this morning to 3500′ this afternoon (5000′ temps at 30-32F), and rises to 6500′ overnight. Wind today will be N 5 in the morning, NE 5-10 in the afternoon, and SW 15 overnight.

A weak system brushes Mt. Hood on Saturday afternoon and drops just a bit of snow. Before that happens, you’ll find packed powder and perhaps some hardpack depending on how warm temps rise on Friday afternoon. Clear sky Saturday morning turns cloudy mid-morning and adds some flurries in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 6500′ early. It plummets to 1500′ in the afternoon and 1000-1500′ overnight. As of this morning’s forecast, we have a prediction of 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) before 4pm, for one to two inches of snow. Overnight: the same… an inch or two. Wind: SW 10-15 early quickly builds to W 45 in the afternoon. This takes the most exposed lifts out of commission. Overnight, the wind swings to NW 35-40.

The wind could be an issue on Sunday morning, but it will fade during the day. With that much wind, some orographic flurries are possible despite models suggesting clear sky. Flurries or not, the sky quickly turns clear and stays that way. The free air freezing level will be 1000-1500′ all day and will rise to about 3000′ overnight. Wind: NW 35-40 in the morning (could affect some lifts), NW 20-25 in the afternoon, and NE 5 overnight.

Monday looks sunny and cold in the morning and sunny and warmer (but still sub-freezing) in the afternoon. Sunshine continues through much of next week. The weather shall stay dry, and it will turn a bit warmer each day thanks o a building inversion. Find yourself a fresh bottle of sunscreen and get ready!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Please do not ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
