Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The weather has definitely decided it’s spring. Not super hot (mostly), not super cold (mostly), and not very much snow in the future (sadly). The only good thing there is the not-much-snow, because we’ll finally work our way to corn snow.
Thursday night will be partly high overcast with the free air freezing level at 7000′. The cloud cover should be thin enough that radiational cooling will refreeze the snow overnight. It was hard and fast on Wednesday morning. Expect a repeat. Thursday will be partly high overcast to start and increasingly cloudy as the day progresses. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 7000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ after midnight. Wind: SW 10-15 early, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and SSW 10-20 after midnight.
Light snow Friday morning gives way to partly cloudy sky in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 7500′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent is forecast. That’s about half an inch to an inch of snain or wet snow at 5000′. Wind: SSW 10-20 early, SE 10 in the afternoon, and variable to 10 overnight.
Saturday will be sunny. The FAF rises from 7500′ in the morning to 10,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable. Temps max out around 50 degrees at 5000′. Sunday starts sunny and relatively warm with light wind. The wind picks up out of the NW in the afternoon and increases overnight. Timing is everything – the earlier the wind arrives, the better chance there is to lose lifts because of it. We may pick up an inch or two of snow on Monday. Longer-range, the weather looks pretty darn dry. Lots of corn snow in your future. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! I keep forgetting to look at the near-term forecast because I’m too excited about the Sunday-Monday forecast. That looks super windy. But let’s look first at Thursday. We’ll have a weak weather system approaching from the NW in the afternoon, and this will 1) cause wind and 2) shift it around. Generally speaking, the Lyle stretch is the place to be with approaching fronts. Expect 10-13 to start the day from Stevenson to Viento. Mid-morning wind rises to 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles. As the front moves closer and causes some lift, the wind drops to 13-16 from Stevenson to Swell and rises to 20-23 from Hood River (or perhaps Mosier) to Avery. River flow Wednesday was 129-165kcfs, river temp is 50.00F (!), and high temp forecast is 62F.
Friday looks calm or darn close to it. Saturday also looks calm or darn close to it. That’s not the forecast for Sunday; a cold front approaches from the NW, and the heat low shifts to the desert. We’ll have 17-20 to start from Stevenson to The Dalles. The wind just keeps ramping up through dark and eventually maxes out at 30-33 from Stevenson to Rufus. We’ll nail down the timing as we get closer. Lingering temp gradients and super-strong offshore high pressure on Monday sets us up for another windy day, probably best east of The Dalles. Again, we’ll need to get closer to see the exact deets. Suggestions: take a rest day Saturday, and don’t wear yourself out early on Sunday. See you out there!

On April 16th at 6pm, Master Gardener Denis Carlson gives a talk at the Hood River Library on controlling rodents in your garden.
Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. HRATS have a fundraiser on 4/20. Raffle tickets are on sale now. Buy some and support your trails organization. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. Some areas of Post are still muddy (shady, cool areas), so consider choosing a different spot to ride. You’ll have Post all summer long! Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Hi skiers and snowboarders! Looking at the forecast for the next couple of weeks, it’s looking like (mostly) the snow we have is all the snow we get. Models have backed off some on their previous calls for snow. Over the next couple of weeks, we’re looking at perhaps a few inches to (very optimistically) a foot or so of new snow. But hey, it’s April. Any snow we do get now is a blessing!
You may want to wait for things to soften on Wednesday. Rain at 5000′ and below on Tuesday means the snow will be hard and fast to start the day. Wednesday will be mostly clear to start then partly high overcast. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ after midnight. Wind will be light/variable in the morning and SW 10-15 from mid-afternoon on through the night. Temps max out around 40F in the afternoon.
Thursday will be partly high cloudy during the day and high overcast overnight. The free air freezing level will be 7000′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. No precip. Wind: SW 10-15 early, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and light southerly oversight.
Friday looks partly high overcast. The free air freezing level starts at 5500′, rises to 8500′ in the afternoon, and falls to 7000′ after midnight. Wind will be light and variable. Temps max out in the upper 40’s. Warm, sunny weather is forecast again on Sunday. The weather cools off some on Monday and turns sunny, much colder, and very windy. Let’s leave it there for now. Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Inland high pressure Wednesday and Friday keeps much from happening. The rest of the time – Thursday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and probably Tuesday – have potential for strong-enough westerlies. Ensembles are pretty consistent in calling for big wind between late Sunday and Monday. More discussion to come…
But first, let’s talk about Wednesday. Not much happening as high pressure briefly takes hold. Easterlies at 10-15 at Iwash and Stevenson early fade away by late morning or early afternoon. Iwash and Stevenson and maybe Viento eventually, early evening, pick up to W 10-13. River flow Tuesday was 114-160kcfs, river temp is 49.46F, and high temp forecast is 66F under partly high overcast sky.
Thursday starts with 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier and picks up to 17-20 by 11am or so. Afternoon wind drops to 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell and rises to 19-22 from Hood River to Rufus. High temp: 64F under partly high overcast sky. Friday brings light west wind, less than 10mph, all day long. High temp: 67F.
Extended: Saturday: probably mid-teens. High pressure strengthens offshore on Sunday, and a deep heat low develops in the desert. The later you wait in the day, the stronger it will be: 10-13 to start, 25-28 at Swell to finish. It’d be an executive session, but it’s the weekend. So… it’s just a late-day blast. Colder air on the west side Monday combines with lingering heat in the desert for … a “Classic Gorge Day”: 30+ from the Hatch to Rufus for Dawn Patrol. Now, we’re looking way out into the future, and that’s not always a reliable way to plan. That said, ensembles are very excited about Sunday and Monday. To a lesser extent, they’re optimistic about Tuesday. Pace yourself. Enjoy!
