Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s another sunny day of spring skiing on Mt. Hood, and the predicted precip has backed off by a couple hours. You’ve got a whole dry day to ride. Get it! Sunshine and cool temps are forecast for Sunday, and then we’ll have a warming trend starting Monday. Yup. Back to spring skiing! Nordic skiers: Teacup is open, but they’re saying they’re close to the end. Get it before it’s gone!
Saturday will be sunny until it’s not. Clouds move in mid afternoon, and a little rain/snain is forecast in the evening. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, 3000′ in the evening, and 2000′ after midnight. Somewhere between a trace and a quarter inch of precip is forecast starting around 5pm. That may start as rain or snain and will transition to snow. Call it a trace to an inch of new at 5000′ by Sunday morning. Wind will be NE 5-10 early, SW 25-40 in the afternoon, WSW 35 in the evening, and WNW 20-30 after midnight.
Sunday starts clear and chilly and turns clear and, well, not hot. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. Wind will be WNW 20-30 early, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and variable to 10 overnight. Temps max out in the mid 30s. Monday will be sunny with light wind. The freezing level rises from 3500′ in the morning to 9000′ in the afternoon and 10,000′ overnight. Temps max out in the low 40s. Next chance for precip is Thursday into Friday, and it’ll likely be cool enough for that to fall as snow. Models still have a fair bit of range in precip quantity, so we’ll hold of on precision forecasting for now. Have a great weekend on the slopes!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! It’s Saturday, and it’s looking like a good chance for some good paddling this afternoon! After today, the next best chance to get on the water is Tuesday afternoon, maybe. Let’s dive in…
Saturday starts with easterlies and switches to westerlies. If you want to try for both, hurry. You’ll have 30ish at Iwash (Rooster) for a couple hours this morning with 20ish at Stevenson and Viento. By 1pm or so, the wind turns westerly at Iwash and shuts off (briefly) at Stevenson. Then the fun begins. An approaching cold front cools off the west side, the east side stays warm, and high pressure persists off the northern California coast. Frontal systems tend to result in unpredictable and gusty conditions. That said, gradients look good. We should see gusty 24-27+ from Stevenson to Swell from 2pm to 5pm followed by gusty 21-24 after 5pm with drizzle in Stevenson. Somewhere in there, the Mosier to Doug’s stretch picks up to 24-27+ as well. After 5pm, the Avery to Threemile section of river picks up to 27-31. It’s probably not going to be the “right” direction for The Wall; you’ll probably be better off at Arlington, where it will still be somewhat gusty. River flow Friday was 109-232kcfs (it’s 232kcfs to start Saturday), river temp is 51.80F, and high temp forecast is 68F.
High pressure builds inland on Sunday and intensifies offshore. This knocks the wind speeds down. The day opens up with 7-10 from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind picks up to 11-14 form Stevenson to The Dalles. Instinct says the wind may overperform, so don’t give up hope yet. High temp: 60F. High pressure holds on Monday and brings the easterlies back. Expect max wind at 20-25 at Stevenson and Iwash (15-20 at Viento) for a few hours mid-morning before the wind drops in the afternoon. High temp: 67F. The heat low shifts inland on Tuesday and sets us up for a moderately breezy afternoon. See you on the river later today!

Strong west wind in the evening. 39% chance of rainbows. Sunday will be cloudy to start and clear in the afternoon. Temps start near 40 and rise to 60 or so. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Monday will be sunny. Temps start in the mid 30s and rise to the upper 60s. Easterlies. No rainbows.

The White Salmon – Bingen community-wide yard sale is April 19th and 20th.The HRATS have a fundraiser on 4/20 at the Ruins. 4/20 is also a cleanup day at Jetty Island. Dirty Fingers has the “Greenlap” today leaving the shop at 4:20pm for a tour of dispensaries in Hood River.
Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. HRATS have a fundraiser on 4/20. Raffle tickets are on sale now. Buy some and support your trails organization. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. Some areas of Post are still muddy (shady, cool areas), so consider choosing a different spot to ride. You’ll have Post all summer long! Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Good morning skiers and riders! It’s another gorgeous day of spring skiing today. Timberline will be closed today (Friday) due to a fire in the lodge’s attic last night. The fire was contained, and everyone was evacuated safely, but the resort will not be open today. If you do go up to ski somewhere, you’ll find frozen granular conditions in the morning and corn snow later thanks to a hard freeze and radiational cooling last night. Sunshine sticks around through midday Saturday, after which we’ll pick up a little bit of snain then snow. Sunshine returns by Sunday afternoon and sticks around through the middle of next week.
For Friday, we’ll have sun all day. Temps are in the upper 20s on the slopes this morning and will rise to 40 or so this afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ after midnight. Wind will be E 25 this morning, E 15 this afternoon, and variable to 15 overnight.
Saturday starts clear and warmer, probably above freezing. Clouds move in mid afternoon, and drop some precip into the night. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ in the morning and around 6000′ when the precip arrives. Even so, the snow should refreeze by Saturday morning thanks to clear sky. Overnight Saturday, the snow level drops to 2000′. About 0.15” water equivalent is forecast. That starts as very wet snow and switches to slightly less wet snow for half an inch to an inch of accumulation at 5000′ Wind: variable to 15 in the morning, SW 25-40 in the afternoon, W 35 in the evening, and WNW 20-25 after midnight. Sunday will be cloudy below 6000′ to start and then clear. A few snow flurries are possible, even likely, in the morning. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning and 3500′ from mid-afternoon on. Wind: WNW 20-30 in the morning, NW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SE 10 overnight. Sunny, warmer weather returns on Monday and sticks around through the middle of next week. Have fun in the corn!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Moderate easterlies today give way to frontally-driven westerlies tomorrow and leftovers on Sunday. We’ll be back to east wind on Monday and probably see westerlies Tuesday. Friday starts with pressures of 30.11/30.24/30.26 for a PDX-DLS east gradient of 0.13. Expect 20ish at Stevenson and 25-30 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock for a few hours this morning. Stevenson then slowly fades to 15, and Iwash slowly fades to 15-20. In a fun twist, easterlies pick up to 5-15 east of Viento to Arlington this afternoon. River flow Thursday was 149-222kcfs, river temp is 51.4F, and high temp forecast is 67F under sunny sky.
Saturday starts with E 15-20 at Iwash, Stevenson, and Viento. The wind goes calm by noon and then switches to westerlies. This starts with 11-14 from Stevenson to The Dalles early afternoon. Models have been all over the place about the late afternoon. As of this morning, they predict a few hours of gusty, unreliable 25ish average with big gusts between Stevenson and Avery. In the evening, they’re currently calling for 26-30 from Avery to Threemile. Frontal passages tend to bring lesser winds than models predict, and the wind tends to be very gusty (and the “wrong” direction at Rufus). That said, let’s see how the models play out in tomorrow morning’s run. High temp: 66F with drizzle as far east as Hood River after 2pm.
Sunday starts with less than 10mph west of The Dalles and 12-15 form The Dalles to Boardman. Strong high pressure builds offshore and starts to build inland. Models call for mid-teens near Rowena and 17-20 from The Dalles to Arlington. I suspect, if the high pressure forecast pans out, that areas east of The Dalles will overperform. High temp: 59F and mostly clear. It’s back to east wind on Monday (30mph or so) as high pressure shifts inland. Hopefully you get some time on the river between all this east wind and west wind!
