Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

today’s gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Easterlies are on the docket today, early Wednesday, and potentially Saturday. There’s a chance at westerlies on Friday at the tail end of a Thursday night west wind blast. Quite a bit of rain will be mixed in with the wind, but that just means you’re likely to have rainbows, at least with the westerlies!

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 29.98/30.07/30.08 and east wind: 25mph at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 10mph at Stevenson. As a very strong low swings up the coast this afternoon, easterlies rise. We’ll see the wind build to 40mph at Iwash, 30-35mph at Stevenson, 20-25mph at Viento, and 10-15mph from Hood River east to Arlington. Weather-wise, we’ll have drizzly this morning, dry weather midday, and drizzle again this afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 79-140kcfs, river temp is 56.5F, and high temp forecast is 53F. Watch for debris in the river.

Easterlies linger on Wednesday morning: 30-35mph at Stevenson and 20-25mph at Iwash with 20mph at Viento. Get it quickly. The wind shuts down midday and turns westerly in the afternoon: gusty 14-17mph from Stevenson to Viento (or maybe the Hatch), calm or nearly so from Swell (or maybe Hood River) to Doug’s, and gusty 19-23mph from Rufus to Boardman. Expect very up-and-down conditions in the afternoon due to instability and showers. High temp: 56F.

EURO ENSEMBLE GORGE WIND FORECAST FOR THE NEXT WEEK

High pressure settles in for Monday and Tuesday leaving us with clear sky and light/variable or east wind. On Wednesday, an approaching cooler system (details unclear) sets us up for a big thermally-driven afternoon. While there will be some dynamics that lessen results, results still look excellent: 27-31 with the potential for more in select areas. Ensembles have been trending UPWARD in wind speeds – always a good thing. And ensembles are 95% in on a big westerly day. Also a good thing. Go ahead and clear your afternoon. Beyond Wednesday, uncertainty increases, so let’s leave it there for now. See you on the river!

MT HOOD SNOW FORECAST

COMING SOON TO A VOLCANO NEAR YOU!

Not much going on in the mountains other than wet, stormy weather for the next few days. Models do hold out hope for cold temps combined with precipitation starting around the 13th.. Maybe that’s unlucky, maybe it’s not! Today, Tuesday starts cloudy with the snow level around 6000′. Clouds dissipate midday and return along with rain this afternoon. The snow level rises to 8500′ overnight. About 0.4” rain is forest. Wind: WSW 15-20 this morning building to SSE 30-35 this evening and SSW 20-40 overnight.

Wednesday will be rainy – showery in the morning and steadier overnight. The snow level starts at 9000′, falls to 5500′ in the afternoon, and will be down to 4500′ after midnight. Most of the precip arrives as rain. Daytime: rain, but it’s unclear how much as it will be spotty in nature and heavy at times. Overnight: another 1.2” water equivalent (WE) with the next system. We could see 1-3” of snow at 5000′ at the tail end, but don’t count on it. Wind: SSW 20-40 in the morning, SW 30-55 in the afternoon, and W 50 overnight which will enhance rainfall perhaps over what I just said. A trace of snow is possible Thursday morning followed by another round of rain, an inch or so, Thursday night.

For the more extended forecast, we have showers Friday and dry weather on Saturday. Models are all over the place for the Sunday-Monday period, so I’ll leave it there for now. Fingers crossed for truth in the long-range forecast of colder temps combined with moisture!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman
ECMWF image of rainfall total through Monday morning. West of the Cascades, amounts run from 2.78" to 4.57". East of the Cascades, amounts range from 0.81" in the desert to 1.71" near The Dalles.

Good morning, neighbors! Wet. That’s the forecast for the next few days. By Saturday, when the weather dries out for a day, models give us 1-1.5” rain for The Dalles and 3-3.5” rain for the Cascades. Even south Wasco gets a good shot of rain as a system arrives from the south this afternoon. High temps generally make it to the low-mid 50s each day and drop into the low-mid 40s overnight. Up on the passes, we have a couple periods where light snow could fall, but most of the time it’ll just be rain up there too.

Glenwood! Bushes!

Tuesday morning kicks off with drizzle to the west and cloudy sky over wet pavement to the east. Glenwood was 38 degrees this morning and gray. Gray sky, gray cats, gray bushes between the legs of people wearing gray wool sweaters. It’s gray da ba dee ba. Know what they’re doing in Glenwood this morning? Baking pies to distribute in the lines at the food bank. While you can’t drop off home baked goods, you can give them to people in line! Know what else you can do: participate in Mutual Aid – ask for help and give help. Cash donations to food banks and people are always best. You trust yourself to spend your money in the wisest of ways. You can also trust people of lesser means to spend their money in the best way possible.

Today’s Gorge weather forecast

Weather today: drizzly this morning west of The Dalles, mostly dry midday, and rainy, again, overnight all the way to Idaho. This time the system comes from the south; while the rain will still be heavier to the west, areas to the east of the Cascade Crest won’t be rain-shadowed. They too get drizzle. High temps will be in the low-mid 50s in the lowlands. Wind: easterlies build to 40mph near Iwash (plonker) Rock and 30-35mph near Stevenson. Snow level: 8000′ or so.

Wednesday Gorge weather forecast

Drizzle Wednesday morning all the way to Idaho stops (mostly) for a few hours in the morning. After that, the atmosphere destabilizes to the west of Home Valley and east of Mosier. Stray thunderstorms are possible as are intermittent heavy showers with the potential for some hail. Areas to the west stay mostly cloudy all day. East: partly cloudy in the afternoon. Wind will be E 30mph in the usual spots (Cascade Locks, Iwash (one-eyed trouser snake) Rock) in the morning. Afternoon: westerly at 15mph west of Hood River and west 20-25mph east of The Dalles with light wind in the middle zone. Rainbow: yes, lots of them.

Extended Gorge weather forecast

Showery weather Thursday morning gives way to rain Thursday afternoon. Details as we get closer. Low temps: mid 40s. Highs: 55-60F. Wind: light/variable. Thursday’s system taps into an impressive atmospheric river. We just get brushed by it. Southern Oregon and northern California (VOTE YES ON PROP 50) get hammered as the intensity of the AR approaches “extreme”.

Speaking of California, what the actual fuck are federal election monitors doing there for a state election? Oh, right, they’re intimidating voters. Fasc*sm is wrong. N*zis are bad. Cutting off food benefits while fully funding ICE, the military, and a $300,000,000 ballroom is wrong, wrong wrong. If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. If your heart isn’t hurting from seeing this, take another look. Want to make your heart feel better? Jump on the TATAS Mutual Aid train – ask for help if you need it. Give help if you can. Even $5 can keep someone’s belly full for a day or get them a used coat so they’re warm. Let generosity guide you. Safe travels. -TATAS
