SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Marginal conditions today give you a rest day prior to much windier conditions Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite some uncertainty, the Euro ensemble is pretty sure every day from Tuesday to Sunday will have enough wind to get many of you on the river. Pretty darn good stretch of wind in the Gorge wind forecast, eh?
Monday kicked off with a light breeze, but it’s now dead calm in front of my place in Hood River. Gradients at 7:50am were 29.98/29.96/29.98 suggesting a not-much morning. After 2pm, thanks to thermal support, we’ll see a slow build. By mid-afternoon, we should see 13-16mph from Stevenson to Hood River. For the Executive Session (after 5pm), the GFS gives us 16-19mph from Stevenson to Doug’s with light/variable wind out east. Want more? Try Jones Beach or the south coast. River flow over the last 24 hours was 136-183kfs, river temp is 66.2F, and high temp forecast is 94F.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Tuesday looks much windier. Moving pieces will complicate the picture, but models suggest enough stability on the west side for a solid day. East of Arlington, instability will be present, so maybe stay west of Arlington just in case? We start with thermally-driven westerlies at 23-26mph from Viento to Mosier with 17-20mph from Lyle to Arlington. It’s likely we’ll see a period of 25-28mph from Stevenson to Doug’s late morning with 18-21mph at Rufus. Given the lack of cloud cover, it’s likely the Hatch will turn gusty and lighter early afternoon. For the rest of the day: gusty 23-26mph between Stevenson and Hood River (less at the Hatch), 27-32mph from Lyle to Rufus, and 23-26mph at Arlington. Executive session, after 5pm, keeps the wind and perhaps returns the Hatch to gloriousness. High temps: 87F in Hood River, 93F in The Dalles, and nearly 100F east of Arlington.
Low clouds push inland on Wednesday morning. A cold front approaches this coast. Given the timing, we’re likely to see strong wind early, a decrease in strength and quality midday, and a return to strong wind in the late afternoon. Early wind will be 22-25mph from Stevenson to Avery with 14-17mph east of Avery to Arlington. A period of 27-31mph is possible from Viento to Rufus in the morning (Stevenson will be cloudy and lighter) prior to the wind dropping at the Hatch and becoming up-and-down all through the Gorge as the cold front swings through. Afternoon: 27-31mph from Stevenson to Arlington with 17-20mph at Threemile, and 14-17mph at Boardman. High temps: 78F to 90F, hottest to the east.
Thursday and Friday bring 20-23mph or so, probably strongest from Mosier to Avery or Rufus. Both days will see โmoving piecesโ that reduce wind quality. Stronger wind is likely on Saturday followed by a lighter (20ish mph) day on Sunday as the west side heats up again. That’s six straight days of wind for you. Enjoy! Make the most of today’s rest day! See you on the Nch’i Wana soon.

Good morning, neighbors! Hot weather is on tap today. A โcooldownโ of sorts arrives on Tuesday for the west side, and that fires off (pun intended) a NWS Fire Weather Watch. Cooler temps on Wednesday bring some clouds to the west and another super windy day. A pleasant (80 degrees), breezy day on Thursday and Friday and probably Saturday set us up for somewhat uncertain, but generally warmer weather starting Sunday.
It wasn’t warm in Glenwood this morning. It was 43 degrees. Gorge roads, as of 8:21am, appeared clear of icy conditions, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t slick spots out there. Know what makes slick spots? A black Nissan Pathfinder, a dusky red Jeep SUV, a black Chrysler Pacifica Voyager Minivan, a dark gray Dodge Durango, a white Dodge Charger, a silver Pacifica, a bright blue Dodge Ram extended cab pickup, and a dark gray Nissan extended cab pickup!
Out in the world at this time today, we have the following conditions:
Bandar-e Mahshahr, Iran: 115, sunny, 12% humidity
Havana, Cuba: 83, partly cloudy, 78% humidity
Muscat, Oman: 101, sunny, 34% humidity
Caracas, Venezuela: 74, partly cloudy, 81% humidity
Nuuk, Greenland: 48, sunny, 80% humidity
Gaza City: 89, sunny, 57% humidity
Ottawa, Canada: 73, cloudy, 63% humidity
Around here, a hot day is on tap. โHot as Fuckโ weather starts at 95 degrees, so it’ll only be โhot as fuckโ close to The Dalles. Farther west and farther east, temps hang in the low 90s, which is still too-hot-too-fuck. High clouds this morning mostly dissipate. Wind will be light westerly to start. It eventually builds to 15 mph west of The Dalles and stays light/variable or calm to the east.
On Tuesday, warm, windy weather is in the cards. NWS already issued a Fire Weather Watch, and I betcha it’ll turn to a Red Flag Warning, which is a dumb name. Any time you are dating, you should be under a Red Flag Warning. If NWS wants to convey fire danger, they should not talk about dating. Anyway, we’ll start Tuesday at 50-60 degrees with clear sky. Hot temps in the desert (nearly 100 in Pasco, which makes the Hermiston watermelons happy) combine with cooler temps โ 83, Stevenson; 87, Hood River; 93, The Dalles โ to make the westerlies blow. We’ll have 25-30mph all day between Stevenson and The Dalles with 25-35mph in the afternoon from Stevenson to the Arlington Equilateral Triangle. East of Arlington, atmospheric instability will be present, which will amplify the fire danger and potentially kick off a thunderstorm or two.
By Wednesday morning, low clouds infiltrate areas west of Hood River. High clouds will be present in the desert, which should make for a pretty sunrise. Early temps will be 55-65 degrees. Afternoon: 75 (which is the perfect temp) in Stevenson, 78 in Hood River, 83 in The Dalles, and 90 in the desert. Low clouds dissipate some but not 100% west of Hood River, which makes for another very windy day: 25-35mph again all the way from Stevenson to Arlington by the afternoon.
Thursday and Friday both look mostly sunny, dry, and breezy with west wind at 20-25mph west of John Day Dam, where people say โDamโ a lot and may also say โdamnโ, but I’m not really sure. High temps Thursday and Friday range from the upper 70s in Stevenson to the low 90s east of The Dalles. A slight dip in temps is likely ?Saturday (with more wind), and then we enter another warming trend. Looks like good tomato-growin’ weather. Yay. I’m so excited after having that first one, and can’t wait for more! Safe travels. -TATAS
