Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Good morning!

I think we were all hoping we’d wake up to a clear, sunny day on Mt. Hood, but apparently the weather didn’t feel like agreeing with the forecast. So, east wind orographic snow flurries this morning (at least it’s something different and interesting!), with clearing skies by noon. That’s your new forecast. As I mentioned yesterday, the NE wind is hard to predict. Models show 5-10 this morning, and it’s already gusting to 35 at 7300′. The NE wind will increase during the day today, becoming quite pesky this afternoon. Total snowfall today will be less than 1”. Total snow blown out of Heather Canyon and into Gulch/Arena will be significant.

Tuesday starts off partly cloudy, with maybe some high clouds, becoming cloudy by 1pm with snow starting between 4pm and 7pm. The snow level will be at the surface at 4am, rising to 1000′ by 4pm. We’ll see at least .4-.6” water value (WV) between 4pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday, for 6-8” of champagne powder. Wind on Tuesday will be W 10-15 early, swinging to SW 20-25 by 10am and SW 35-40 by 4pm.

Wednesday starts off with that 6-8” on the ground and the snow level at 500′. We’ll see an additional .,1-.3” of WV from 4am to 4pm, for another 2-5” of snow. We’ll have another .4-.6” WV between 4pm Wednesday and 4am Thursday, for another 6-8” of the light and fluffy stuff. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 35-40 early, swinging to W 35-40 late in the afternoon and holding overnight.

Thursday starts off with powder on the ground and brings snow flurries with sunbreaks. The snow level will be at 500′. Total accumulation will be less than .3” WV, for 1-3” of new snow. Wind will be WNW 30-35 early, slowly fading to 20-25 by 4pm.

The extended forecast – and remember, it’s a long ways out and subject to change – is not making me happy. Things warm up a little too much for my liking on Friday afternoon/evening, and stay too warm for my liking through midday Sunday. And that’s all I will say about it at this point, because I’m not pleased.

If you’re wondering about the potential for sticking snow in the Gorge, my thoughts are that it’s likely in Odell/Parkdale Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, but that it’s going to be borderline under 500′.

Again, windsurfers and kiters with warmer hands and feet than I have will enjoy a very windy day on the river on Wednesday.

Have a great day today!

Good morning!

Don’t forget that your sponsor today is the new 10 Speed, 10 Speed the deluxe, the roasting house, the home of the best beans in the Gorge. Sure, there’s 10 Speed on the Heights, in Mosier, and in White Salmon, but this one is at 13th and State in Hood River, it’s open ’til 8pm, and it’s got beer, with $3.50 pints during happy hour, 5-6pm! And… delicious food, with pastries baked on site. You need coffee. 10 Speed needs you.

The snowstorm will continue for a bit this morning, before fading away to much less stormy day this afternoon with a decent chance of partly cloudy skies by afternoon. The snow level will be around 500′ today, dropping to the surface in the evening. The wind will be WNW 20-30 early, dropping to W 15-20 by 10am, 10-15 by 1pm and going to light and variable mid-evening. Total snowfall will be .1-.2” water value (WV), for 1-2” or less in the morning.

Monday starts off partly cloudy, becoming clear by midday. It’s going to be cold, in the low teens, with the freezing level at the surface. Winds will be light and variable early, picking up out of the NE as the day goes on. These NE winds are pretty hard too predict, so I’ll just throw out 20-30 for the afternoon.

Tuesday starts off clear, becoming cloudy mid-morning with snow starting around 1pm. The freezing level will be at the surface early, rising to 500′ by 10am and holding for the rest of the day. Wind will be W 15-20 early, going to SW 15-25 around 10am, SW 30-35 by 1pm and SW 40-50 by 7pm. Snowfall will be moderate and steady Tuesday into Wednesday, for 1” of WV between 4pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday, for 8-12” of new snow.

Snow continues Wednesday morning, with the snow level remaining at 500′. Wiond will be WSW 45-50 all morning, becoming more westerly Wednesday afternoon. Total snowfall will be .4-.5” WV 4am-4pm, for 4-6” of new snow during the day, followed by another .4” by 4am Thursday, for 4-5” more snow.

If you want windsurfing or kiting, we’ll have another round of huge west wind on Wednesday, with 30-40+ east of Hood River.

Have a great day today!
