Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Wednesday
Thursday
Friday

Good morning,

It continues to snow on Mt. Hood today. The snow level will be around 1000′ early, rising to 3000′ by 2pm, 4000′ by 5pm, 5000′ by 8pm and 5500′ by 11pm. Wind will be SW 20-30 early, rising to SW 45-50 by 11am and holding in the 40-45 range the rest of the day. We’ll get .5-.8” water value by 4pm, for 5-8” of new snow. With warming air coming in above, it’s not going to be the fluffiest snow, but it’s still snow.

Temps rise into the low to mid-thirties at 5000′ overnight, with the freezing level at 6500′ Thursday morning, 7000′ by 5am, slowly dropping: 6000′ at 11am, 5500′ at 2pm and 3000′ at 5pm. Wind will be SW 45-55 pretty much all day. We’ll see .4” WV Wednesday night into Thursday morning, becoming a mix of rain and snow in the wee hours, or if we’re lucky, freezing rain. Then the GFS and NAM models disagree about daytime precip amounts, with the GFS showing .5” and the NAM showing up to 2”. Let’s go with 1” of rain during the day Thursday, followed by .3-.5” WV snow, for 3-5” of new Thursday evening after the snow level drops.

Friday starts off partly cloudy, or with high clouds, with the freezing level at 2000′. That will rise to 4000′ by 2pm and hold through the day. Wind will be SW 40-45 early, dropping to 20-24 by 11am, then swinging to S 20-30 by 2pm. As a powerful, compact low pressure system heads our way, we’ll have to keep a careful eye on the wind, as it could be quite strong depending on what track the storm takes. At this point, models show SE 30+ at 5pm, swinging to SSW 30-35 at 8pm, but I think that’s less than we’ll see. Anyway, snow starts falling sometime in the evening.

We’ll have .4-.5” WV by Saturday morning, with the snow level down to 1000′, for 4-6” of new snow. We’ll see periods of snow flurries with possible sunbreaks Saturday. Wind on Saturday will be SW 50-55 early, dropping to SW 30-35 by 8am, 10-15 by 11am, going to SSW 5-15 by 2pm and E 20+ by 8pm. Sunday looks partly cloudy with flurries.

Long term, models suggest a break in the weather early next week followed by a return to cold, snowy weather.

Have a nice day today.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday

Good morning,

Well, Mother Nature won yesterday’s round. I was sure we’d see rain and freezing rain, and we got lucky with snow all day. Today we’ll have snow. The snow level will be around 1000′ or less all day with SW wind at 35-40 all day, dropping a bit to 25-30 late in the evening. We’ll see .4-.5” water value (WV) during the day, for 5-7” of new snow. Skies will become partly cloudy to clear by 4pm, staying partly cloudy overnight.

Snow starts falling again tomorrow morning, with the snow level less than 1000′ in normal places and at the surface in the Gorge early, rising to 3000′ by 2pm, 5000′ by 8pm and 6000′ by 11pm. Wind will be SW 30-35 early, picking up to 40-50 on 2pm and 40-45 by 8pm. We’ll see .5” WV by 4pm for 4-6” of new snow. We’ll see another .5” WV after 4pm for a mix of snow and rain, with 4-6” of new snow above 6000′.

Thursday starts off with a mix of snow and rain with the snow level at 6000′, rising to 6500′ by 11am and dropping back to 3000′ by 2pm. Wind will be SW 45-60 early, picking up to 50-65 by 11am and backing to 40-45 in the afternoon. We’ll see very heavy precipitation on Thursday: 1-1.5” between 4am and 4pm, with mixed precip early becoming all snow toward the end of that time period. I don’t know how much will be snow and how much will be rain. Sorry about that. Another .4-.5” WV will fall between 4pm Thursday and 4am Friday for 5-6” of new snow.

Friday morning starts off with snow flurries, becoming sunny or partly cloudy by 2pm. Wind will be SW 40-45 early, dropping to 15-20 by 2pm. After 2pm, a powerful low pressure system swings up the coast, giving Mt. Hood very strong E or SE or S wind and heavy snowfall.

Saturday looks cold and snowy becoming partly cloudy and Sunday looks sunny or partly cloudy with little to no precip.

Sounds like we have a Post Canyon work party coming up this weekend in the Riorden Hill area. More details to follow on that. I’d also like to throw out a brief reminder that there’s a meeting about the Naito Cable Park on Monday. Please make plans to be there whether you are for or against the park. I personally am for the park, and am hoping we can support it on the condition that the Port/Naito beautify the area with a bunch of native trees and plants. Why do I support the cable park? It’s pretty unobtrusive visually, it’s quiet, and it’s going to bring a boost to our economy as well as giving all of us (and the kiddies, of course) something fun to do on those hot, no-wind summer days. End of semi-political discussion.

Back to the weather, you’ll find west wind at 24-28 in the eastern Gorge today with gusty, lighter wind near Hood River.

Have a nice day today. Enjoy the storm.
