Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

High pressure off the coast combines with low pressure in the desert and a deep marine layer in Portland for a windy day on Friday. Low pressure envelops the region on Saturday, taking the wind down a few notches. Rain forecast somewhere between Portland and The Dalles, with disagreement on models, complicates Saturday’s forecast. Sunday has a different complication: a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

For Friday, low pressure moves into Washington while high pressure reigns offshore. Gradients start at .14 (pdx-dls) and .11 (td-psc) and increase during the day. Deep marine air and shower in the west will limit the wind’s development. Models suggest 16-19 in the western Gorge, but it’s possible a happy surprise could appear. Wind east Celilo starts the day at 26-29 and builds to 30-33 from Avery to Threemile or possibly Rowena to Threemile, saving you a drive if the clouds stay far enough west. River flow is 270kcfs and river temp is 54 degrees.

Saturday welcomes in a widespread area of low pressure and a band of rain. Models disagree on where this rain will materialize: one has it over the Willy Valley, and one has it over the central Gorge. This, of course, complicates the wind picture. Generally speaking, the western Gorge will be 7-10 early and 10-13 in the afternoon. East of the rain, wherever it lands, the wind will be 10-13 in the morning and 22-25 in the afternoon. The most likely scenario has the strongest, steadiest wind from Avery to Threemile.

Sunday starts with 7-10 out of the west through the entire Gorge. Afternoon wind drops below 8mph east of the Dalles. Westerlies hold on at gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to Doug’s. This picture is complicated by a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Those could bring through short squalls, lightning, and thunder.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: Jones Friday: 5-8. Saturday: 5-8. Sunday: 13-16. Sauvie’s Friday: nope. Saturday: nope. Sunday: nope. Coast (north/central/south. North wind unless otherwise noted). Friday: NW15-20/NW10-15/25-30, NW swell 7′ at 8 seconds. Saturday: NW5-10/NW510/25-30, NW 9′ @ 11. Sunday: NW5-10/10-5/30-35, NW 6′ @ 9.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Lots of clouds this morning give way to less clouds this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. 2% chance of rainbows. Saturday might be rainy or the rain might stay over Portland. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 60’s later. Light westerlies. Questionable rainbows given the questionable forecast. Sunday looks mostly cloudy with rain to the north, possibly drizzle in town, and a chance of thunder and showers in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 70’s later. Light westerlies. 8% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the bottom. Lower Lewis River is open.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the calorie burning and calorie replacing coffee and donut run at Kickstand in Hood River at 7. You can ride bikes with Hood River’s mayor at the waterfront park at noon.

Mt. Hood Meadows was going to be open this weekend, but they’ve decided to cancel skiing due to an unfavorable weather forecast. Lyle has pioneer days on Saturday with music in the evening. Rufus has their annual catfish derby this weekend with a car show on Saturday.

Trail users can give back this weekend – a surveyor’s ridge party meets at 9am at Little John snopark tomorrow. Moto trail 180 gets some love too – meet at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9. New treadwork happens at Dee’s Punchbowl falls on Sunday.
