Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Not much happening out there to start the week, but the wind will return this afternoon. Tuesday looks like a windier one, but being driven by a frontal passage, it’s a bit complicated. High pressure builds on Wednesday and shuts the wind down. After that: easterlies for a few days followed by a lot of uncertainty heading into the weekend and next week.

Monday starts rather calm. Pressures agree: 30.19/30.19/30.20 for a very light offshore gradient. As a system approaches this afternoon, desert heating will outpace metro area temps leading to gusty westerlies. By early afternoon, we’ll have 10mph from Stevenson to Swell. Expect a quick bump to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s early in the afternoon. A period of 20-23 at Swell isn’t’ out of the question, but if it happens, it won’t last too long; the stronger wind, 20-23mph, shifts to Lyle-Avery mid afternoon. Rufus rises to 17-20 at that point, and Stevenson-Mosier drops to gusty 15-18. River flow over the last 24 hours was 84-103kcfs, river temp is 69.44F, and high temp forecast is 84F for Hood River.
That system I mentioned moves inland tonight. As it passes, probably prior to dawn, there will be a period of strong wind from Viento to Swell. If we’re lucky, it’ll still be there for dawn patrol, but it probably won’t. Models have marine clouds all the way to Rowena to start Tuesday with drizzle west of Hood River. By the numbers, the day starts with 12-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s (more at Viento, probably) and 20-23 out east. Thanks to very strong offshore high pressure, we’ll see stronger wind in the afternoon. When the clouds burn back west of Swell, you’ll find gusty 21-24 from Viento to Hood River with 24-27 from Lyle to Threemile. Stevenson likely stays cloudy, which means it would hold in the 13-16ish range. There’s a decent chance tomorrow’s wind will over-perform – offshore high pressure looks to climb to 1031mb, and that can make the wind exceed expectations. There is a wind advisory posted for the eastern Gorge. With this being a frontal passage, the wind is likely to be quite gusty for the Maryhill stretch and a bit steadier for the Blalock-Threemile stretch. High temp: 70F for Hood River and 75F for Arlington.

High pressure settles inland on Wednesday and shuts the wind down. After a brief bout of 13-16mph from Viento to Swell early, the wind goes calm or nearly calm. High temp: 76F for Hood River and 75F for Arlington – no temp gradient at all!

Extended: easterlies of some sort are forecast Thursday, Friday, and possibly Saturday. Models move the heat low inland sometime in the Sunday/Monday/Tuesday time frame (most likely Monday). This results in a big day somewhere in that time period. It’s worth mentioning that there’s a decent chance of instability and thunderstorms for the weekend as flow aloft turns southerly. Beyond Sunday, the range of possible outcomes is quite large, and it’s not worth guessing. Temps start in the upper 40s and rise to the mid 70s. Moderate westerlies early. Calm wind by late morning. No rainbows.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel. Fire or fire danger closures: Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, most of Post Canyon, Gorge 400, trails around Mt. Adams. Dog River is closed for logging and rerouting until mid-September. Open: 44 Road Trails, Ape Canyon, Lewis River, Falls Creek, Columbia Hills, Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, Siouxon, Sandy Ridge. Twin Tunnels reopened for a day or two, and then it closed again – I have photo evidence to prove this! Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
