SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! The wind sure was being uncooperative yesterday, and the current isn’t helping at Rufus. I had a report of paddlers going backwards yesterday โ it’s a good time of year to have some sort of power other than a paddle in your hands! Looking at the Gorge wind forecast… we have very active weather for this time of year persisting through Wednesday. After that, a heat wave is forecast. Wind during the heat depends on the exact location of the ridge and the intensity of heat in various locations. Models are currently all over the place on wind strength and direction during the period of hot weather.
Saturday will not be hot, but it will be breezy. Pressures started with 29.95/29.91/29.86 and a low pressure system approaching BC. Thanks to cool air aloft, we’ll have instability and showers affecting the wind today. Early wind was generally under 15mph west of The Dalles with 15-18mph from Avery to Boardman. As a trough (cool air) moves inland midday today, we’ll see the wind pick up east of Lyle.
Afternoon westerlies eventually build to gusty 23-26mph from Mosier or Lyle to Doug’s with gusty 26-29mph, perhaps a touch more, from Avery to Arlington. Farther east: 22-25mph. Areas west of Mosier/Lyle will be under 15mph most of the day with a shot at gusty 15-18mph from mid-afternoon on. River flow over the last 24 hours was 219-267kcfs (229-267 at Rufus), river temp is 61.7F, and high temp forecast is 61F in Hood River and 72F in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Sunday brings another round of moving pieces โ brief ridging inland shifts east ahead of an incoming strong cold front. If you’re interested in doing something community-oriented, HRATS have a Post Canyon trail brushing party in the morning. Meet at 9am at Family Man with brushing tools (weed wackers, loppers, etc). Wind-wise, the day starts with marine clouds to the west and sun to the east with west wind at 7-10mph west of Avery and 18-22mph from Avery to Boardman. During the day, as the system approaches, the wind fades. If, and this is a big if, the front draws close enough early enough, we could see a short period of 20mph westerlies ahead of it. That’s probably going to happen after dark. High temps: 68F to the west and 75F to the east.
You can pretty much write off Monday due to rain that lingers all day. Wind will be light all day west of John Day Dam. In the afternoon, it picks up to 14-17mph east of John Day Dam. High temps range from 66-75F.
Ensembles indicate some sort of westerlies on both Tuesday and Wednesday, but the strength of the wind isn’t yet clear. Given the fact that showery weather is likely to linger in the western Gorge (west of Hood River) both days, you’ll probably be seeking wind east of Hood River. Beyond that, uncertainty increases as hotter weather enters the picture. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! It’s Saturday, and exciting stuff is already happening today! First, we had a giant rainbow stretched across the day at dawn โ Ma Nature, thank you for your support of us queer folk during Pride month! Next, it was snowing at 5300′ this morning โ look at the Meadows webcams to see it for yourself! Over the next five days, the snow level fluctuates between 4000′ and 8000′, with the heaviest precip, sadly, coming with the snow level above 6500. Cool weather continues through Wednesday, and then we’re struck by an abrupt warming trend that sends us into our first real heat wave of the season. Cherry farmers โ Monday’s precip totals still have some uncertainty, but models are trending wetter, even way out into the desert.
Glenwood and our friends around the world this morning
Let’s look around the region. Despite temps hovering around 0C at 850mb (~5000′), Glenwood is 44F this morning. It must have been cloudy and/or breezy most of the night. Looking at our friends around the world: Tehran is 87F, sunny, with 19% humidity; Havana’s forecast is 80F, sunny, and 78% humidity (MUGGY!); Muscat, Oman is 93F and 67% humidity with a forecast low of just 88F; Caracas, Venezuela is 73F, 82% humidity, and cloudy with a chance of rain; finally, we have Nuuk, Greenland, where it’s just 38 degrees and partly cloudy with a chance of mixed precip on Monday and Tuesday. !CE report โ not spotted this morning, at least not yet, but activity has been picking up the last couple of weeks in the metro area.
Today’s Gorge weather forecast
Today’s weather will be cloudy to the west and partly cloudy in Hood River with mostly sunny sky to the east. Sprinkles, showers, and pop-up thunderstorms are possible west of Mosier into the evening. Temps started the day in the 45-50F range. We finish with 57F in Stevenson, 66F in The Dalles, and 72F in the desert. West wind builds to 15mph west of Mosier with 20mph between Mosier and Murdoch and 25-30mph from The Dalles to Rufus. Late in the day, the wind spreads all the way to Hermiston.
Sunday’s Gorge weather forecast
Brief ridging Sunday leaves us with dry conditions. Make the most of it! Clouds start the day west of Mosier, and sunshine is forecast to the east. After midday clearing, clouds arrive from the west in the afternoon ahead of the next (powerful) incoming cold front. Wind will be 5-10mph to start west of Avery with 15-20mph east of Avery in the morning. Afternoon wind drops below 10mph all through the Gorge, but there may be a brief burst of 20-25mph wind after 5pm ahead of the incoming system. After midnight, a few showers are possible near The Dalles. Sunday’s high temps range from 65F in Stevenson to 72F in The Dalles and 75F in the desert. One last thing about Sunday: temps at 5000′ will be around 0C. Combine that with clear sky and light wind for a shot at frost in Glenwood and Dufur if those areas are clear. Parkdale, if it’s clear, will likely fall below 40F.
Monday’s Gorge weather forecast

Real rain is forecast on Monday. Normally we like rain, but this is bad timing with cherries ripening. Grab your Parka, parka, and/or umbrella. Rain starts near Cascade Locks around 5am, The Dalles around 8am, and Arlington around 2pm. Rain eventually spreads all the way to the Tri-Cities, continuing all through the Gorge overnight. As of this morning, it’s unclear how much rain we’ll receive, but models are trending upward on amounts; PWAT (available moisture) looks to be upwards of 1.0โ. Expect little to no wind west of Rufus with 15mph east of Rufus. High temps range from 63F (Stevenson) to 70F (The Dalles) and 75F (Pasco). The snow level starts at 6500′ and climbs to 8000′ by the afternoon before dropping to 4000′ overnight.
The high-res models for Monday are starting to come online. Take a look at the GFS 4/3k idea of how much rain we’ll have by 5pm Monday. It’s not pretty. NOTE: this particular model is in the upper range of what models are predicting. Many of the ensemble members call for less. Either way… this system does have the potential to bring significant rainfall.
Extended Gorge weather forecast
Cool weather continues Tuesday and Wednesday with highs ranging form 65-75F. Showers extend to Hood River on Tuesday and only to Cascade Locks on Wednesday. The snow level hovers around 4000′ for the time period. Warmer weather is forecast after that with hot weather possible starting next weekend. It sure isn’t a boring spring this year, is it? Safe travels. -TATAS
