Good morning,

Oh hello spring. It was 50 degrees yesterday afternoon in the Gorge, and oh did that feel nice! Your mountain biking report, courtesy of the nice folks at River Drifters, is that Syncline had great dirt yesterday afternoon (and a spectacular sunset). Apparently the strong west wind dried the dirt out fast. You know where I’m headed today, should the rain stay well away from us!

Is it going to rain today? Well, probably, but the worst of the precip will stay above us in the Cascades. So, expect a few on-and-off showers today, along with west wind at 20-24 under the clouds and 26-30 in the desert. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy, with sun in the afternoon, along with west wind at 20-24. The evil inversion, with the low clouds of death, will probably return Friday and hold through Monday, meaning you’ll have to go to the mountain to get some sun later this week.

Up on Mt. Hood, yesterday’s 17” of new was completely ruined by two things: storm-force wind, falling trees, and an afternoon warming spell that hit 39 degrees. Okay, that’s three things. Anyway, we’re starting from scratch up there again with snow quality. Right now the snow level is around 5000′, and it’s snowing. The snow level will drop to 4500′ by 1pm and 4000′ by 7pm. We’ll get .5-.6” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 5-6” of new snow. After that, we’ll get another .1-.2” WV overnight, for a couple inches more. And that’ll be it for a few days. Wind today will be NW 40 early, WNW 40 around 1pm, and WNW 30 at 7pm.

Tomorrow starts off partly cloudy on Mt. Hood, with temps hovering right at freezing up to 6000′. The sky clears by mid-morning, with sunshine and temps in the low 30’s with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 6000′. Wind will be NW 20 early, dropping to NW 10 midday.

Friday looks sunny and warm, with the FAF at 9000′ and wind at NW 15 early and W 15 by midday.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday look clear, with highs around 40 degrees and the FAF at 11,000. Wind will be light and variable.

The next round of precip is forecast for Tuesday…

Saturday looks clear, and Sunday brings light precip of some sort.

Have an awesome day today!

1/29 Mt. Hood mixed precip, Gorge wind, and sun for the end of the week.

Good morning,

Well, it’s another winter morning in the Gorge, and today we’re starting off with some monster west gradients through the Gorge: .17/.09/.43. That should give us westerlies at 35+ at Maryhill and Arlington early, but they’ll back off to gusty 26-30 fairly quickly. Tomorrow brings another round of west wind at 24-28. We’ll see rain in the Gorge this morning, backing off to showers (at worst) this afternoon. Tomorrow also starts off with rain, and also backs off to showers. Thursday looks dry, but will likely be cloudy in the Gorge. Friday brings a better chance of warmer, clearer weather.

Up on Mt. Hood, it’s storming like a ************ this morning, despite the telemetry reading the same speed and direction as yesterday, when it was just storming like a *****. The snow level is around 4000′ right now, and should climb to 6000′ by 10am, and possibly as high as 6500′ by 4pm. We’ll see .6” water value (WV) by 4pm, heaviest early, for 3-6” of new snow, depending on when/if this switches to rain. Personally, I’d prefer we just see wet snow today, but the sounding model is insisting that won’t happen. It looks like it will rain overnight, with .4” WV by 4am Wednesday. Wind will be NW 45-50 early, 40-50 for the rest of the day, finally dropping to 35-40 around 4pm.

Wednesday starts off with heavy precipitation, and with models predicting the freezing level at 7000′, this likely isn’t going to be the correct kind of mountain precipitation. The snow level will drop to 5500′ at 10am, 4500′ at 4pm, and hover around 5000′-5500′ overnight. Around 1” WV of precip falls by 4pm, with rain at first and 2-4” of snow next. Another .3-.4” WV falls overnight, for 2-4” of new snow by Thursday morning. Wind Wednesday will be WNW 50 early, 45-50 by 4am, W 40-45 for the rest of the day, slowly dropping to WNW 35 in the evening.

Thursday sees the end of the storm cycle, with partly cloudy sky. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ early, rising to 5500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be WNW 10-15 all day.

Friday looks clear and warm, with the FAF at 8500′ all day and wind NW 10 early, S 15 late.

Saturday looks clear, and Sunday brings light precip of some sort.

Have an awesome day today!
