Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s another partly cloudy morning on Mt. Hood, and the weather should turn sunny today. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning and 5000′ in the afternoon. Given the sun strength, we should still see corn snow, and long-lasting corn snow at that, this afternoon. Wind will be NW 10-15 all day. Today is the last day of the Mt. Hood Meadows season. Sunday looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ after midnight. Wind will be NW 10-15 all day. Monday loosk sunny. The FAF will be between 8000′ and 10,000′ all day. Wind will be light and variable early and NW 10 in the afternoon. Tuesday also looks sunny and warm with light wind.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Today’s forecast is a bit tricky, as offshore high pressure combines with a trough of low pressure moving inland. Generally speaking, we don’t like stuff moving around in the atmosphere. That tends to diminish wind strength and quality (as happened yesterday when the front moved through later than predicted). We also have a situation this morning where gradients are running ahead of model predictions. Pdx-dls was .10 at 5am and dls-psc was .08. Early morning wind was hovering in the 17-20 range out east and the 11-14 range in the western Gorge.
Given the fact that we have a 1035mb high pressure offshore, I think the wind will outpace model predictions today. We’ll see 23-26 this afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier, possibly at Rowena and Doug’s as well. The wind in the eastern Gorge will back off to 12-15 this afternoon. River temp is 52 degrees, and flow at The Dalles is 375kcfs, quite high for the Maryhill stretch of river, just FYI.
Tomorrow sees high pressure build across the Pacific Northwest. This is another one of those situations where the actual wind tends not to match the model predictions. As of right now, the GFS says we’ll see 10-13 to start the day with the wind fading away in the afternoon. I think we’ll see 15-18 from mid-morning on between Stevenson and Mosier. Monday currently looks light and variable early with 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier from mid-afternoon on.

Random Morning Thoughts
One of our secret magic therapist tricks is helping people create more distance between their concept of self and their emotions. Buddhists do the same thing and take it a step further, but positing that there is no self. Here’s what I’m talking about:
Perhaps you are feeling anxious. Instead of saying, “I am anxious,” you say, “There’s anxiety present.” Or you use whatever language works for you, but you take the “I” out of the picture. This allows you to watch the anxiety instead of creating more stories about it.
Sure, you can create stories about the presence of anxiety. You can want it to go away, for example, which, by the way, will only create more suffering for you. But when you pull the “I” out of the picture, you can no longer add the story of anxiety being an intrinsic part of you, perhaps a part that makes you a bad person.
Anxiety (or whatever) is simply there, and eventually (hopefully) it will go away again. It’s just a physical-emotional process, not who you are. The same goes for all the rest of your emotions. I should say that if anxiety (or another emotion) sticks around for a long, long time, it’s worth checking in with your MD, because physical stuff can trigger long-lasting emotional states. Okie dokie. Have an awesome day, no matter your current state of mind.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking
There should be plenty of excellent dirt out there this weekend. In a bit of good news, the Dog River trail is now clear of snow. The Dog River Super D race is Sunday, meaning there will likely be people shuttling and practicing today. Perhaps it’s best to avoid that area until Monday. Remember that there are cattle out on Hospital Hill, so dogs are not allowed at this time. She Spoke has a women’s shuttle ride today at 9am at Dirty Fingers – $10. Mountain View has a women’s bike ride today at 9am. Free.
