Wednesday. More rain down here. More snow up there!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I mentioned yesterday that models were bouncing around on the snow level predictions about last night. Reality ended up being warmer than yesterday’s model run, and most of last night’s precip fell as rain on the slopes. That said, the snow level dropped this morning, and significant snow is falling, and will continue to fall. Remember that T-Line is the only resort open today and tomorrow. Meadows returns on Friday. So, for today, the snow level will be 4000′ during the day and 1500′ after midnight. We’ll see at .5-.7” water value (WV) during the day, for 5-8” of new snow. Another .3-.5” falls tonight, for 4-6” of dry snow. Wind today will be W 35 during the day and WNW 35 overnight. This wind direction will enhance snowfall, so we may see even more snow than models are predicting.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued

Thursday sees continued orographic snowfall (enhanced by terrain and wind direction). The snow level will be 1500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and less than 1500′ under mostly clear sky in the wee hours of Friday. We’ll see .5”-.7” WV during the day, for 6-8” of powder. Another .3-.6” falls overnight, for 4-7” of powder. .Wind will be WNW 30-35 all day, dropping to NW 20 after midnight.

With NW wind sticking around on Friday, it’s likely we’ll have some orographic snow flurries under partly cloudy sky in the morning before the sun takes over in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1000′ early and 4000′ in the afternoon. Maybe an inch of new snow will fall. Wind will be NW 20 to start the day, NW 15 in the afternoon, and light and variable after midnight.

Saturday currently looks sunny, then cloudy, then rainy in the evening. Sunday looks snowy.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and we’re starting off with gradients of .07 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc), which is a fancy way of saying that it’s likely to be windy after this rainy blob moves through. High pressure will shift northward along the coast today and strengthen, increasing gradients after noon. You can expect 10-13 this morning through the entire Gorge. After 1pm or so, the wind will pick up both under the clouds and to the east. The exact location of sun will determine the strongest, steadiest wind today. Expect gusty W 20-25 under the clouds (probably Stevenson to Mosier) this afternoon with 28-32 in the sunnier areas, likely Mosier to Threemile.

Thursday sees that high pressure stick around offshore, setting up another windy day despite rain in the western Gorge. We’ll see 10-13 under the clouds to start with 20-23 from Maryhill to Arlington. The wind will backfill to the western Gorge after noon on Thursday, giving us W 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington and gusty 15-18 under the clouds in the western Gorge.

Friday looks like a sunnier, drier day, and that should shift the wind further west. Expect 15-18 from Viento to Mosier to start the day. The wind will pick up late morning to 24-27 from Hood River to Rufus with 15-18 near Stevenson and also east of Rufus. Weekend models, while inconsistent, are hinting at calm wind Saturday morning with a late burst of frontally-driven westerlies followed by steadier, longer lasting westerlies on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

My lovely and inspirational monk friend was talking last night about the niyamas, which are, on one level, guides for living a good life, and on another level, a way of looking at the causes and conditions of things that befall us. And some other stuff, I’m sure, but I’m no Buddhist scholar.

We, generally speaking, have the tendency to personalize our experiences, to believe that we are the cause of things that happen to use. Part of this is because we crave control and predictability. In service of this, we craft stories, conscious and unconscious, about why things happen and what we can do to prevent or encourage less/more of those things in our future.

But most of the time, a chaotic confluence of circumstances gives birth to a given situation. The niyamas suggest that our genetics, state of mind, natural law, karma, and spiritual pathway are part of any situation.

In other words, let’s take the time I flipped my car. I blamed myself for this, but my crappy driving was only one part of the situation: perhaps I was distracted because my awareness and attention weren’t developed enough. Perhaps there was the perfect combination of standing water, slush, road construction, gravity and momentum to cause a rollover. It’s possible, if you believe in such things, that past life conditions, or things I did earlier in this life contributed to what happened. I could control very little of this, and so I need to figure out how much, if any self-blame is appropriate.

Anyway, that’s just one way of looking at one event. We tend to take on more guilt and self-blame for most situations than is appropriate, given how many things out of our control influence each situation. It’s important to take a wider, less personalized view when we are reacting to the circumstances of our lives. By taking full blame, we suffer more. Be realistic. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s too wet to ride your mountain bike today. If you do, you will damage the freshly-groomed trails. It’s also, unless you have raingear, too wet to ride your road bike. But maybe some of you like to ride road bikes in the rain?

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday morning. There’s community meditation at Flow at 8:15. There’s community yoga at the FISH food bank at 10am. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm and Zumba at the St. Francis House in Odell at 6pm

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Mountain Film Festival runs Friday through Sunday at the Skylight Theatre – this brings together the best of the Banff and Vancounver mountain film festivals. The Overlook Film Festival, a celebration of all things Horror, happens at Timberline Lodge today through Sunday.
