Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

Looks like today or early tomorrow morning are the times to hit the mountain, because the Pineapple Express is going to stop at Mt. Hood station for a day or so. For today, Tuesday, expect light snowfall this morning with heavier snowfall overnight. The snow level will be near the surface (in the Gorge, anyway). We’ll see .1-.2” WV between this morning and 4pm, for 1-3” of new snow. Another .4-.6” WV falls overnight, for 4-6” of increasingly heavy snow as the air aloft warms. Wind today will be light SW early, rising slowly during the day to SW 25.

Wednesday starts off snowy, but it won’t be long before the snow switches to rain. The free air snow level will be at the surface early, rising to 9000′ by 4pm and staying there overnight. We’ll see perhaps 2-4” of dense snow early in the morning, followed by 1-2” of rain overnight. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 25 early, rising steadily to SW 45+ after midnight.

Thursday starts off warm and rainy. After this system moves through, the snow level will drop, but by that time most of the precip will be gone. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 5000′ around 4pm, and 4000′ after midnight. Approximately 1.5” of rain will fall before the snow level drops, followed by 1-3” of new snow. Wind will be SW 45+ in the morning, dropping just a bit during the day to SW 40 after midnight.

Friday sees light snowfall as the snow level drops from 4000′ to 2000′. Around 2-4” will fall during the day. The wind will be SW 35 early and W 35 in the afternoon. The weekend currently looks sunny on the mountain, but that’s a long ways out to be forecasting.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind at 30-35 all day on Tuesday near Iwash. East wind at 30-35 Wednesday morning rises to E 50+ Wednesday afternoon. East wind backs off to 35-40 Thursday morning and light and variable Thursday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

We have officially entered the zone of my worst nightmare about being in grad school in Portland and living in the Gorge: trying to navigate the commute during the coldest, snowiest, iciest winter in 50 years. It feels like the snow and ice is endless.

That sense of “this will never end” can be a huge contributing factor to our mental distress. We get caught up in stories about how we’ll feel this way forever, how a situation will last forever, etc. Occasionally those stories are true. Whether they are or not, the struggle with reality or perceived reality only increases our distress.

When situations feel endless but aren’t, it’s important to keep reminding ourselves that “this too shall pass”. And when a situation arises that does not have an end, our only path to peace is acceptance. It’s easier said than done, of course, but that’s where relief will be found.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pack a bag so I can escape the Gorge before I’m trapped and can’t get to school. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy Tuesday. Temps will be in the low 30’s all day today with light snowfall starting up around noon or so. Expect 1-3” for all areas of the Gorge. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday sees significant snowfall followed by sleet and then freezing rain. See the TATAS forecast for the full details. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday also looks quite icy. Temps will remain in the upper 20’s to low 30’s during this time period. We’ll warm above freezing sometime between Thursday midday and Friday midday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led by the monks from Pacific Hermitage. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.

Have an awesome day today!
