Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

The valley forecast is so difficult this morning that I’m really late getting to the rest of the forecast. In a nice twist, the predicted track of this incoming storm has shifted enough that it now looks like temps will stay low enough for almost all snow on the slopes throughout the duration. The snow level will be at the surface early, rising to 5500′ in the afternoon and dropping back to 4000′ after midnight. There will be on and off flurries, with the snow picking up after 1pm, possibly mixed with sleet or raindrops this evening and possibly not. We’ll see .3-.4” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 3-4” of new snow. We’ll see another .7” WV between 4pm today and 4am tomorrow, for 5-6” of dense snow. Wind will be SW 20-25 all day, rising to WSW 45 after midnight.

Saturday looks quite snowy. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, dropping down to under 1000′ after midnight. Between 4am and 4pm, the mountain will receive .7” WV, for 6-7” of new snow. Another 1.5” WV or so arrives overnight, for 12+” of moderately dense snow by Sunday morning. Wind on Saturday will be WSW 40 in the morning, turning to SW 35 in the afternoon.

Sunday currently looks bonkers on the hill if you like powder refills. If you’re going on Sunday, expect big crowds, and do remember that SkiBowl has the best nachos. The current model run has the snow level under 1000′ all day. Between 4am and 4pm, over 1” of WV falls, for at least a foot of new snow. Another 1” WV moves in between 4pm and 4am for another foot or more of new snow. This snow will be light, dry and fluffy, and you will want to go enjoy it. Even night skiing will be epic on Sunday if these snowfall rates materialize. Wind on Sunday will be SW 30 all day long.

Looking ahead to Monday, we see more snow with a low snow level. So, if you don’t want to fight the Sunday crowds, Monday is certainly going to be a good day on the hill.

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind at 55 this morning backs off to 45 this afternoon and 25 overnight. East wind at 20 on Saturday morning eventually turns westerly near Rooster with light easterlies near Stevenson. The wind looks light and variable during the day Saturday, having big implications for the weather. Same on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was having a 10/10 crappy day yesterday, and despite my problems, I had to pull it together for my clients. While chanting a compassion mantra to myself helped, what really helped me was actually sitting in the room with someone and having compassion for them.

When our inner emotions feel intolerable, sometimes is best to focus on pleasant feelings for someone else. Feelings, a lot of the time, are just feelings without a target. If we can summon up one, it’ll leave less space for the others. It doesn’t really matter at whom we’re directing the emotion, because our system is experiencing the emotion.

In other words, holding compassion and caring for another human being will help us feel some sense of being held, some relief, when we are down. On the other hand, if we direct anger and hatred towards others, we’ll feel anger and hatred, which I think we can agree are not all that pleasant.

While your emotional state may feel out of control at times, it is possible to impact it at least a little by holding positive emotions towards other people. When you get good at that, you can hold positive emotions – love, compassion, caring – for yourself, lessening your suffering.

In case you were wondering, a compassion mantra might look something like this: “I care. I care about this suffering. By this caring may the suffering be eased.” The more you can embody that, the more you’ll be filled with caring. I care about you. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Although it snowed a little this morning, it’s stopped now. We’ll see more snow this afternoon and then snow switching to freezing rain tonight. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and the upper 20’s (maybe) later. 2-4” snow followed by 1/4” ice. East wind. Ice continues on Saturday, possibly switching to rain but quite possibly not. Up to 1/3” ice. Temps Saturday will be in the upper 20’s early and the low to mid 30’s later. Sunday’s weather really depends on whether we get above freezing or not. If we don’t, we’ll see over a foot of snow. If we do get above freezing, we’ll see heavy rain at river level and heavy snow in the upper valleys.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis.

Upcoming Events

As always on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee run, where jogging 4.1 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. It’s at 7am, which I find really early. I wish they’d put it on a 2 hour delay when there’s snow and ice. Coming up this evening, Kickstand Coffee hosts a snow and avalanche awareness thing at 7pm. That’s a fundraiser for Crag Rats and NWAC.

Have an awesome day today!
