Monday. We like snow, yes we do. We like snow and freezing rain too!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s snowing on Mt. Hood this morning, and before I get too into the forecast, I’d like to point out that these snow levels correspond with the Cascades, not necessarily with the metro area. The air is colder the further east you go. The snow level today will be less than 500′ all day. Between 7am and 4pm, we’ll see .4-.6” water value (WV), for 5-7” of new snow. We’ll see another round of precip after midnight. Between 1am and 4am, another .2” WV falls, for 2-3” of snow. Wind today will be WSW 25-30 for much of the day, going to SW 15-20 after 4pm. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tuesday looks like another snowy day on the mountain, but model discrepancies in the afternoon storm system make it impossible to predict how much snow the mountain will receive in the evening. The snow level will be 0′ for the entire time period with temps on the mountain in the teens. We’ll see .3” WV in the morning, ending by 10am, for 2-4” of new snow. The next round of precip arrives around 7pm, but the amount of snow really depends on the exact track of the storm. Let’s call it .4-.6” WV between 7pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday (it’s a guess), for 5-7” of dry, fluffy snow. Wind on Tuesday also depends on the storm track. As of now, we’re looking at SW 15 early, W 25 midday, and E 35-40 (problematic for lifts) in the afternoon and evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Wednesday morning also depends on the track of the storm system. As of now, the snow level will be at the surface, with 5000′ temps in the teens. We’ll see a couple inches of snow during the day (???) before the sky clears in the evening. Wind will be E 30 early, fading to N 10 in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday and Friday both look clear and sunny on the mountain. The skiing on the groom will be absolutely off the charts both days. The snow level will be at the surface, Temps will be in the upper teens, and the wind, at least on Thursday, will be light. The next storm system is currently forecast for early Saturday morning (a few inches of snow) followed by another on Sunday evening (rain), but those systems are really too far out for the forecast to be reliable.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have an easterly gradient of .07 this morning, down from the peak of .39 yesterday morning. That, by the way, is a huge east gradient. Anyway, light east wind at 10-15 continues all day. Tuesday starts with E 15-20, backs off a little midday, and climbs to E 50-70 in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like E 50-60 early and E 15-20 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Decision making can be quite difficult, especially when there are multiple layers and multiple people involved. We can spend a ridiculous amount of time going back and forth between options. No, you are not the only person who does this – I’ve been debating for several days whether to risk today’s drive to school and back!

One of the things many of us do is get caught in our congnitions when trying to make a decision. Yes, it can be helpful to create a list of pluses and minuses for each side of a decision. It can also be helpful to involve gut instinct. A quick way to do this is to imagine choosing an option. Allow that outcome to be your entire world for a moment. Study your emotional reaction.

Then take a moment and cleanse your mental palate. Do the same thing with another option. Your emotions just might tell you more about the best path than your lists. I, for example, feel a great deal of relief when I consider not making the snowy and icy drive to school and back tonight. I’m going to trust that emotion and stay home.

Be safe on the icy roads, and may your decision-making processes be clean, clear and eventually peaceful without regrets. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy and snowy start to the day down here at river level. Temps will be in the low 20’s this morning and the mid to upper 20’s this afternoon. We’ll see 1-3” of snow today in the form of on-and-off snow showers. Maybe we’ll see some freezing rain, but snow is more likely. Light east wind. No rainbows.

Tuesday starts off in the upper 20’s and does not climb into the mid 30’s as the computers suggest. Perhaps the upper 20’s. Anyway, we’ll see a shot of heavy snow Tuesday morning with 4-6” everywhere in the Gorge, ending by noon. The next weather system comes in Tuesday evening, but models are all over the place on exactly where, and that will have a huge impact on precip amounts. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks to be in the upper 20’s all day. We’ll see snowfall ending by 9am or so, with dry weather all the way through midnight Friday. Woot-woot. East wind. No rainbows.
