Tuesday-Wednesday. March: in like Oregon, out like Hawaii. #feelthesunburn

There’s no snow in the forecast this week for Mt. Hood, but on the bright side, there’s also no rain in the forecast! Expect sunshine today (Tuesday) with the free air freezing level at 4500′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NE 20-30 at 5000′ all day long. As of 8am, this seemed to be impacting the Mile at T-Line and Cascade at Meadows. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Wednesday looks sunny and warmer. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day long. Wind will be quite disruptive in the morning: NE 30-40, enough to cause lift trouble, especially at Timberline which seems to be disproportionately impacted by east wind. Strong easterlies also will shut down upper lifts at Meadows, and possible even Upper Bowl at Skibowl. By the afternoon, the wind will fade to ENE 10-15, allowing everyone to resume full operations.

Thursday looks sunny. The FAF will be 10,000′ with light and variable wind. Friday looks much like Thursday, with the wind turning SW 10-15 in the afternoon and a few little fluffy clouds arriving. One thing to keep in mind with these long sunny stretches is the possibility of Superbowl at Meadows. I’m uncertain (this being my day off) if Superbowl Road is in, but it’s worth bringing a beacon, shovel, probe and partner on Thursday and Friday, just in case.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s not going to be a very windy week in the Gorge. Despite a .06 west gradient this morning, we’ll see, at best, west wind at 10-13 for a short period before it turns light and variable midday and E 5-10 in the afternoon. Out on the coast today, we’ll have north wind at 15-20 (north), 20-25 (central) and 30-35 (south) with a NW swell of 6′ at 11 seconds.

Wednesday starts with E 15-20 at Stevenson and Rooster and fades to light and variable after 2pm. Thursday looks like E 5-10 early with light and variable wind in the afternoon. Friday looks light and variable with W 5-10 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how White American culture is so focused on individualism and so neglectful of interdependence. Given that humans, for much of their existence, lived in groups of around 40 individuals, this is a stunning turn of events. On some level, this probably has a lot to do with specialization and capitalism: if you can buy the material goods you need at a store, then you don’t need to rely as much on the people around you to help you meet those needs.

Our culture, unfortunately, has placed higher value on material goods than on spiritual and emotional goods. Sadly, true happiness and connection comes from the latter, not the former. Our emotional wealth and our spiritual wealth (defined as a connection with something larger than ourself), underlies all the happiness we receive from the purchases we make or the time we spend on the snow, on the water, or shredding brown pow (not Brown Pow – don’t shred him!)

I hold the hope that our culture is moving in a direction where we’ll value interconnectedness as much as we value a six-figure paycheck. We can help nudge our culture in this direction by doing simple things: smiling at others, saying hello to our neighbors, creating communities of like-minded individuals with a sense of purpose, and weaving our hopes and dreams with the hopes and dreams of others. It doesn’t take much to give our community a bump in a more positive direction. Smile and say hello to the people around you, and have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Today’s one of those days where I didn’t have to move from bed to see the weather. It’s off-the-charts beautiful. Expect sunshine all day with temps in the (brrrr) low 30’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Light west wind early, light east wind late. No rainbows. Wednesday will be sunny with low temps in the upper 30’s and high temps in the upper 60’s. Light wind. No rainbows. Thursday and Friday both look sunny with lows in the low 40’s and highs in the low 70’s. Yes, you read that right: low 70’s!!! It’s possible we’ll see some clouds and sprinkles for the weekend.

Road and Mountain Biking

You will find lovely dirt, I am sure, in Post, at Syncline, at the Kitchen Sink, on the Gorge 400, and maybe, just maybe at the Whoopdee, finally. Also, the Kleeway has reopened. You will find lovely dirt every day through Friday, as a matter of fact. You will also find amazing road biking conditions, with light wind each day through Friday. Temperatures will be in the 60’s today and 70’s by Thursday. And don’t forget about the Gorge Roubaix race and the Gorge Gravel Grinder this weekend out in The Dalles. In other bike news, the Gorge Roubaix race the weekend of April 3rd is still looking for volunteers. Sign up and help keep a good thing going.

Upcoming Events

Coming up this Tuesday evening, I will sadly be in school, so y’all have to go to meditation for me. 6:30pm at Yoga Samadhi with the monks of Pacific Hermitage. Also today: Community yoga at 4:3pm at Flow, Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, and pickup touch rugby at the ball fields next to Jackson Park at 5pm.

Coming up on Wednesday, there’s community meditation at 8:15am at Flow Yoga. There’s community Hatha yoga at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove at 8:30. The Hood River County Recreation Trails Committee meeting will be at 5pm at the OSU extension office Wednesday night. There’s also ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5pm and Aikido at Trinity Natural Medicine on Belmont at 6pm.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the Gorge Roubaix bike race and gravel grinder ride are Saturday and Sunday out in The Dalles. On Saturday evening from 5pm-9pm, the Dirty Harlots mountain bike race women’s team has their season kickoff party and fundraiser at Kickstand Coffee.

Have an awesome day today!
