It’s snowing up on Mt. Hood this morning, and it’s looking like a stormy day up there all day today. The snow level is going to fluctuate a bit. Our friends at NWS think we’ll see the snow level stay around 4000′ all day, but the GFS 850mb model and the sounding model both suggest we’ll see the snow level climb high enough – 6000′ or so – for a period of very wet snow or mixed precip midday. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
The snow level today, Sunday, will be 4500′ early, rising to 6000′ around 11am, dropping to 5500′ by 2pm and falling to 2500′ by 8pm. We’ll see .6” water value (WV) between this morning and 5pm, and that’s going to fall as wet snow with maybe some r**n mixed in. Call it 2-4” of new. We’ll see another .7” WV between 5pm today and 5am Monday, for 5-7” of additional snow. Wind today will be SW 15 early, rising to SW 30-40 by 11am and dropping to SW 20-25 in the afternoon, becoming WSW after 7pm.

Monday looks colder with orographic snowfall all day long. I’m not sure I’m buying the snowfall predictions, but I sure like what they are saying. Models say the snow level will be 1500′ all day Monday. Those models suggest we’ll see .5” WV between 5am and 5pm Monday, for 5-6” of new. Then the models say we’ll receive another .5”-.6” WV overnight, for another 5-6” of new snow. Sounds good, eh? I think the models are predicting a little on the high side, but still, Monday looks pretty awesome on the mountain. Wind Monday will be WSW 35 early and W 40 in the afternoon. That’s storm skiing, for sure.
Tuesday sees a few lingering snow flurries in the morning followed by sunshine. The snow level will be 1000′ early and 2000′ in the afternoon. Expect strong wind: W 35-40 early and W 30 in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like an epic bluebird packed powder groomer day. The snow level will be around 2500′ with WNW wind at 20ish.
Monday starts off colder with orographic snowfall that continues all day. Models do tend to be unreliable in forecasting terrain-enhanced snowfall, so this is a bit of a tricky forecast. The snow level will be around 1500′ all day. If the models are correct, and we do have reason to think they are exaggerating, we’ll see .4-.6” WV between 5am and 5pm Monday, for 4-6”+ of fluffy new snow. That will be followed by another .4-.6” WV, for another 4-6”+ of new snow Monday night. Wind on Monday will be W 40 all day, which does lend some credence to the prediction of heavy orographic snowfall.
Tuesday also looks snowy, with an additional 5-9” of snowfall possible, if those models are correct. Basically, we’re looking at a very snowy stretch of weather for the next several days. Hooray!

Gorge Wind Forecast
We’re starting off Sunday with east wind at 25-30 at Rooster with no wind at Stevenson. The wind will fade midday and switch to west wind mid-afternoon. We’re quite likely to see a burst of strong westerlies at 26-30 from The Narrows to Swell, possibly at Mosier too, this afternoon. If the models are correct, the wind will be gusty 12-15 east of HR, with the exception of Arlington/Threemile, where we’ll see gusty 26-30+ late this afternoon.
Monday starts off with W 5-10 or a little more. The wind will pick up mid-morning to W 22-25 from Swell to Hood River, with 28-32 from Mosier east to Arlington. Tuesday looks like W 10-13 early in the western Gorge and W 20-23 early in the eastern Gorge. The wind will pick up to W 22-25 from Swell all the way to Arlington in the afternoon. Wednesday looks light and variable.
Random Morning Thoughts
Goodness… I hope you people got more sleep than I did last night. This Daylight Savings Time switch is always a rough one! Anyway, I’m sitting here this morning thinking about a conversation I need to have someone this week, and I’m noticing all the assumptions I’m making about what might happen. The last time I had such a conversation with this person, it freaked him out, even though I was quite gentle. I don’t know if he was freaked because of my approach or my tears, or if it was something within him.
Anyway, my last experience makes me hesitant to try this again. We do this all the time – we base our future expectations on past experience, even though, as the financial folks say, past performance does not predict future results. We allow our fear of the future to impact our performance in the present, and that only brings more pain into our lives.
I don’t know what the right approach is to these situations. It varies by who you are, I suppose, but honesty and authenticity is a good start. My approach is rather Gestalt – I like to name exactly what’s going on with me and go from there. In other words, I’ll say, “Hey, I want to bring something up, but the last time I did, it didn’t go well. So, I’m afraid to bring something up now…” And then the conversation can roll from there.
The important piece, I think, is to recognize when you’re letting the past create fear about the future. None of us wants to live in fear, right? So, it’s good to see when you are creating fearful situations for yourself. When you see them, you can unravel them, and then you can live a freer, easier life. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
Well, we’re definitely not going mountain biking today with all this rain falling from the sky. Road biking today? Well… looks pretty showery to me and also quite windy if you wait until the afternoon. If you’re wondering when the trails might dry out, you’re looking at the end of this week. It looks dry Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
