Saturday. Powder season is back!

mikeRainbowMosier
Although it rained a little on Mt. Hood last night, it was snowing as of 4:30am, and it’s going to keep snowing all day today and for much of the next three days. The snow level today will drop quickly from 5000′ to 3000′, staying there all day long. Models suggest .4-.5” water value (WV) between 4am and 4pm, followed by another .3-.4” of orographic snowfall tonight. That means we’ll see 3-4” of heavy new snow during the day, followed by another 3-4” of new snow tonight. Wind today will be SW 20 early and SW 30 in the afternoon and evening. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off partly cloudy or cloudy with a few flurries. Heavier snow moves in around 11am, maybe lessening up in the afternoon and picking up overnight. The snow level Sunday will be 2000′ early, rising to 5000′ with the precip, and falling to 1000′ by Monday morning. If the models are correct, we’ll see .4-.6” WV between 11am and 5pm, for 3-4” of heavy new snow. Then we’ll see another .3-.5” WV overnight, for 3-5” of dry, fluffy snow. Wind on Sunday will be SW 20 early, rising to SW 40 midday and turning westerly overnight.

Monday starts off colder with orographic snowfall that continues all day. Models do tend to be unreliable in forecasting terrain-enhanced snowfall, so this is a bit of a tricky forecast. The snow level will be around 1500′ all day. If the models are correct, and we do have reason to think they are exaggerating, we’ll see .4-.6” WV between 5am and 5pm Monday, for 4-6”+ of fluffy new snow. That will be followed by another .4-.6” WV, for another 4-6”+ of new snow Monday night. Wind on Monday will be W 40 all day, which does lend some credence to the prediction of heavy orographic snowfall.

Tuesday also looks snowy, with an additional 5-9” of snowfall possible, if those models are correct. Basically, we’re looking at a very snowy stretch of weather for the next several days. Hooray!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s actually looking like quite a windy three days coming up, and if you can stand 43 degree water, you’re likely to find some time on the river. We’re starting out Saturday with light and variable wind with a W .03 gradient from Portland to The Dalles. By noon or so, we should see W 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles with gusty 25-29 from Avery eastward to Threemile.

Tomorrow looks like a better setup for steadier wind, but timing is going to be everything. We’ll start out the day with E 15-20. An upper level low will move onshore into Washington late in the afternoon, giving us W 26-30 with stronger periods from Swell (quite gusty) to Threemile. It’s hard to say if this will happen before dark or not, but the extra hour of daylight we gain tonight will help!

Looking at Monday, I’m really wishing I didn’t have to be in Portland – we’ll start off the day with offshore high pressure and inland low pressure and west wind at 13-16. This is a pretty good setup for Gorge wind. You can expect the westerlies to pick up around 11am or so, with gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Mosier and relatively steady (for winter, anyway) 26-30+ from Rowena eastward to Threemile.

Random Morning Thoughts

There was a love rally in Hood River last night in response to recent hate crimes in Hood River. I spent a little time on the Google this morning looking for hard statistics tying hate speech to hate crimes. I found a few articles suggesting a correlation during the previous election cycle, which was tame compared to this one. It’s not a good sign. Anyway, that wasn’t what I wanted to talk about… I wanted to talk about faith.

I had an interesting conversation with a pastor last night about change and faith. She shared a story about Mother Theresa’s inconsistent sense of her faith. Yes, even Mother Theresa didn’t feel God (wholeness, connection, love, etc – whatever you want to call it) all the time. Faith isn’t just about being in touch with something bigger than the Self. It’s also about having love and connection with the Self.

Just as faith in something bigger can flicker, so can self love. In those times, it’s important to remember that everything changes. Everything comes and goes. When we lose faith in ourself or when times get painful, it’s important to remember that pain too will pass. In the moment, it may not feel like that’s true. And holding on to an intellectual hope may not bring much solace. But intellectual hope can grow into something deeper and stronger over time, and that alone can bring some light.

Faith in change may be enough to help us individual humans feel better. I don’t think faith is enough to help our country. We need to take action against the rising tide of hatred. We need to combat it with loving speech. With acceptance. Engaging with hatred, reporting on hatred, and hating on hatred only fuels it by condoning it. It makes me queasy that the media continues to report on hate speech as a spectacle. It’s time to report on love speech as a spectacle. It’s time for us to speak of the positive, rather than complaining about the negative. It’s time for us to use silence against the hatred. When we give hate a voice, it grows. The same goes for love and acceptance. If we give those a voice, they too will grow. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

As I was writing this report, it was absolutely pouring rain at my house. That means none of us are going mountain biking today, because none of us want to damage the trails, right? Instead, there’s a work party in Post Canyon, meeting at Family Man at 9am. Put on your rubber raingear and get on that! Road biking, well, maybe this afternoon after the rain backs off? Tomorrow looks rather wet for road biking, but Monday looks better.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today, the HRATS have a trail work party at Family Man at 9am. Big Winds has a SUP demo and other stuff happening at the Nichols Boat Basin from 1pm to 4pm. There’s a trail run this morning at 8am. The we set the clocks ahead (and lose an hour of sleep) tonight. Joy, oh joy. Coming up tomorrow, there’s yoga at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm.

Have an awesome day today!
