Random Morning Thoughts
An interesting thing happened at grad school last night… our confused professor arrived for class 30 minutes late. After he explained why, a wave of resentment and anger went through the room – people are really stressed about this class. A couple minutes later, he announced that the mid-term would be takehome, rather than an in-class, closed book exam. A wave of excitement went through the room.
Our nervous systems are wired to be in connection with the people around us, and that can make for some interesting experiences. This is part of why going to a crowded event (a Seahawks game, for example) can be so exhilarating; we’re picking up the emotional state of those around us, not just experiencing our inner world.
That said, it’s important to be aware of what emotions are ours, and what emotions belong to those around us. If we’re not cognizant of the difference, we can find our mental state impacted by the states of those around us. Conversely, we can choose to let ourselves be impacted by the emotional state of those around us. My Buddhist monk friends, for example, choose their teachers in part by the radiance of the potential teacher’s spirit.
This raises an important point: we are impacted emotionally by those around us, so it’s important to choose our friends and our community wisely. If we surround ourselves with unhappy, cruel, or angry people, our inner world will shift in that direction. If we surround ourselves with kind, loving, authentic, and self-aware people, we will morph into kinder, more loving people. As the Grail Knight said in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, “Choose wisely…” Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking
I took my mountain bike over to Syncline yesterday morning, and found perfect dirt on Moab and Maui. It was so perfect that I didn’t go higher. I got a report that the backside trails are still muddy on Hospital Hill. I’m guessing there’s still some snow in Post Canyon, and if there isn’t it’s too muddy. Whoopdee? Anyone’s guess, but probably too muddy to ride. What a difference from last winter, eh?
