Thursday. Rain, snow and rainbows.

highwaywaterfall
It is raining on the slopes of Mt. Hood this morning, and temps will be too warm to support anything other than rain until tomorrow morning. Fortunately, there’s not a lot of rain in the forecast. The snow level will be 8000′ this morning, rising to almost 10,000′ for a period this afternoon before slowly dropping back to 5500′ by 4am tomorrow. We’ll see .2-.4” WV during the day today (all rain) followed by .2-.5” WV after midnight (this really depends on the actual location of the next front – a shift by 50 miles could make a huge difference). That after-midnight round of precip may turn to snow at the end, for 1-2” of new. Or maybe not. Tricky forecast, that one… Wind today will be SW 30-40 all day. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with mixed precip, switching to snow mid-morning and clearing midday. Another round of precip moves in after midnight. The snow level tomorrow will be 5500′ early, dropping to 5000′ mid-morning and rising to 5500-6000′ in the afternoon and evening. Borderline snow levels like these make for tricky forecasting… We’ll see .2” WV (depending on the location of the weather system – could change!) in the morning, for mixed precip, or maybe an inch of snow. Another system moves in after midnight with .2” WV, for mixed precip or maybe an inch of snow. Wind on Friday will be SW 20 early, falling to SW 10 in the afternoon and picking up to SW 15 overnight.

Saturday looks colder with light snowfall. The snow level will be at 5000′ early, falling to 3000′ during the day and 1500-2000′ after midnight. We’ll see .3” WV during the day, for 3” of new, followed by another .4” WV after 7pm, for 4-5” of new by Sunday morning. Wind Saturday will be SW 20 early, S 10 midday, and NW 20 in the evening. Sunday looks windy and sunny with the snow level around 1500-2000′.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m always surprised when someone makes a donation to my website. I grew up in a family that was still influenced by depression-era thinking, despite there being no lack of money. I’ve made a choice to run my life from a place of generosity, as have so many of you. I’d like to encourage you this morning to consider make a small donation to a website that may contribute a lot to your life: Hood River Weather.

It’s a free/by donation service that brings together a lot of local weather resources. Not only does it provide information, it provides a gathering space; Larry’s chatroom has created a place for weather geeks to geek out. More importantly, it’s become the go-to place for up-to-the-minute road conditions throughout the Gorge.

If you haven’t visited Hood River Weather, I recommend you do, especially if you have any tiny bit of weather geek in you – you’ll make new friends by saying hello in the chatroom and attending one of Larry’s get-togethers. Friends, as you well know, are priceless. If you find the website useful, scroll down below the chatroom and click on the paypal button. Make a little donation so Larry can pay his hosting bills, buy seeds for his garden, and have a beer with his weather friends. Thank you all for your support of both me and Larry. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues.

Road and Mountain Biking

After seeing several Strava recordings from Syncline over the last few days, I decided to go take a look myself. First, you people have done an amazing job of not riding when the trail is muddy or in freeze-thaw. I’ve never seen Syncline look so good in the winter. Next, Maui and Moab were tacky and rideable, minus the fact that the bridge near the bottom of Maui was under water. The doubletrack is really too wet to ride without damaging it. I didn’t go above the fence, so I don’t know what’s happening up there. This doesn’t mean Syncline is totally good to go, but it does mean that I would ride up-Maui-down-Moab without worries.

What’s the best way to help your muscles recover from a day on the mountain? A rejuvenating massage from Holistic Massage of Hood River. Specializing in injury treatment and pain relief, they’ll work out your knots and get you ready to go play in the snow again. Open 7 days a week and until 10 pm most evenings so you can fit massage into your busy lifestyle. Want to win a massage? You gotta be on the mailing list for that!

Upcoming Events

Coming up tonight, there’s community yoga at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi (with Tish – she’s great), there’s Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30, Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30, and kayak polo at the Hood River pool at 8pm. Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run – 4.1 miles, 1 cup of coffee, 1 donut. The run requires effort. The snacks are free.

Have an awesome day today!
