Wednesday. 20″ is a lot of fresh. Get it before it rains tonight.

DSCF0260
There’s quite a bit of new snow on Mt. Hood this morning – I looked back over yesterday’s forecast, and I saw that Mother Nature beat the forecast by 5” – I predicted 15” in 24 hours, and we received 20” in 24 hours. That’s a lot of snow, for sure. Given the very strong wind that’s been blowing overnight, it’s likely some of that snow is going to be wind-affected, but I bet you’ll find amazing powder stashes too. Not only will the riding be great today, but the sun’s going to come out. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Expect the snow to stop sometime between 7am and 9am, with sunshine midday and rain after 7pm. The snow level will be 2000′ this morning, 6000′ around 4pm, and 8000′ tonight. We’ll see maybe an inch or two of additional snow before the sun comes out, and then we’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) of rain tonight. Wind today will be NW 40 early, NW 20 midday, and SW 10-15 in the afternoon, picking up to SW 20 overnight.

Tomorrow starts off with light rain, probably turns misty and foggy midday, and sees another round of light rain, probably switching to snow, overnight. The snow level tomorrow will be 8000′ for much of the day, falling to 5000′ after midnight. We’ll see light and hopefully insignificant mist during the day, followed by .1-.2” WV mixed precip after midnight, for maybe 1” of new snow. Wind tomorrow will be SW 25 in the morning and SW 35 overnight.

As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 6-8” of new snow during the day on Saturday with the snow level around 2000′, followed by flurries on Sunday.

Random Morning Thoughts

As I mentioned yesterday, I’ve been working on a genogram about my family, and this has brought up some thoughts for me about mental illness and stigma. Mental illness is tough on a family, and it’s especially tough on children. When parents are struggling, they aren’t always able to be there in an attuned way for children, and that can lead to children developing struggles of their own. What children need in difficult times is supportive adults, and families who isolate themselves only make matters worse.

In our society, we stigmatize mental illness, and that often leads families to disconnect from resources that would benefit both parents and children. Those resources include other families, churches, playgroups, sports clubs, school activities, etc. An ill parent, or a symptomatic child, becomes an excuse for isolating the family from that which it needs most: connection with other human beings.

Mental illness is just another illness like a cold or flu or malaria or cancer – we have this Cartesian idea that the mind and body are separate, but they aren’t. Next time you’re angry, notice what your body does in response – the answer to that isn’t going to be “nothing”, that’s for sure! Our thoughts and emotions and feelings and bodies are inextricably linked with each other. It’s time for us to stop stigmatizing illnesses that manifest in emotional symptoms. It’s time for us to give sick people of all sorts the support and love they need to heal. Be good to each other. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’ll have a cloudy day with a few sprinkles in the morning, maybe some sunbreaks midday, and clouds in the afternoon with light rain after 7pm. It’s going to feel downright tropical – temps will be in the mid 40’s all day long. Light west wind early, east wind in the afternoon, 73% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow looks cloudy and grey with sprinkles all day long. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Friday sees light rain in the morning and clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early. If NWS is right, temps will be in the upper 40’s in the afternoon, but I’m not sure I’m buying that. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks rainy at river level and snowy in the upper valleys.

Road and Mountain Biking

There have been an awful lot of people posting photos and Strava records at Syncline. I have no idea if that means it’s okay to ride, but I think it means we’d better go inspect it…
