It’s snowing on Mt. Hood this morning and will continue to snow all the way through tomorrow morning. In an interesting twist, the sounding model is predicting much colder temps (and a lower snow level) than the 850mb model or, for that matter, reality. Given that, I’m going with a bit of a blend on the snow levels today. Expect the snow level to be around 3000′ all day today. We’ll see .5” water value (WV) between this morning and 4pm, for 4-5” of new snow. Another .8-1” WV comes in tonight, for 8-10” of new snow. Wind today will be SSW 20 in the morning, SW 25 in the afternoon, and W 40-45 overnight. That wind will be enough to redistribute the snow into deep, fluffy piles for tomorrow morning, although some exposed areas will be turned into windslab and sastrugi. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow (Wednesday) starts off with a brief period of snow before the sun makes an appearance for much of the day. Clouds move in late tomorrow afternoon and precip starts around 10pm. The snow level will be 3000′ early, rising to 5000-5500′ in the afternoon and 8000′ by midnight. We’ll see .2-.5” WV first thing in the morning, for 2-5” of snow, followed by sunshine. Bluebird powder! Then we’ll see .4” WV after 10pm, most of which will fall as rain. Boo hiss to that. Wind Wednesday will be W 40 in the morning, fading slowly to SW 15 in the afternoon and picking up to SW 30 overnight.

See below for details.
Thursday looks showery all day long. The snow level will be 8000′ early, falling to 6500′ around midnight and 5500′ after midnight. We’ll see .3” WV between 4am and 4pm, a break in the weather, and another .3” WV after midnight. Most, if not all of that will fall as rain, possibly with some snow mixed in early Friday morning. Wind Thursday will be SW 35-40 all day.
It’s worth noting that precip amounts for the Wednesday night into Thursday system will be dependent on the exact location of the storm track. If it moves further inland than currently predicted, we’ll go from under 1” of WV to inches of rain… Fingers crossed…

Random Morning Thoughts
Because I’ve been taken down by one of the viruses from the PSU petri dish, I spent yesterday working on a class project: a genogram. Genograms are like family trees, but they include information about relationships, physical and mental illness, family myths, occupations, and lots of other information that’s intended to help people understand family functioning.
Because family patterns tend to repeat through generations, a genogram can give you insight into why your family does what it does, and also why you do what you do. Just talking to your relatives as you construct a genogram can give you insight if you notice your reactions. Do you feel safe asking questions? Do you feel like you’re breaking rules? What happens when you pick up the phone to make a call – are you excited, filled with love and anticipation, afraid, worried? All of this is important information about how your family functions, and all of this is important information about how you function in the world with people outside your family.
Give it a shot if you’re bored one day. Here’s a very basic tutorial. It’s easy, enlightening, and might just help you be more at ease in the world. Have an awesome day.
