Tuesday. Here comes the cold. Here comes the sun.

westhils
This morning started off clear and blackbird on Mt. Hood, but it didn’t take long before a weak weather system brought in some clouds and flurries. We’ll see alternating flurries and sunbreaks today, through this evening, before the sky really clears off tonight. The snow level today will be less than 1000′. Mt. Hood will receive .1-.3” water value today, for 1-4” of new snow. Wind will be NW 15 early and W 10-15 this afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Friday looks clear and sunny. In an interesting twist, models suggest 5000′ temps will climb into the low to mid 30’s on Friday, while temps in the Gorge are in the teens in the morning and in the 20’s in the afternoon. That’s a massive inversion! Anyway, wind on Friday will be SE 20-25 all day long. As of right now, the weather on Mt. Hood looks clear and sunny through Monday, with just a slight chance of a system breaking down this high pressure ridge on Tuesday.

With this kind of high pressure ridge in place, it’s looking increasingly likely that your forecaster will take a couple of days off soon. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast

I was curious if the wind ever switched to westerly yesterday, as the models were insisting it would. Looks like Rooster Rock went calm for a bit, and Stevenson turned westerly for just a few hours late in the afternoon. But that was it, and we’re back to increasing west wind today. Both Rooster and Stevenson are reading right around 20mph this morning. They’ll pick up to 30-35 today, and are already beating model predictions. By tomorrow, we’ll have east wind at 40ish at Rooster. Expect 50+ Thursday through Sunday at Rooster with 30-40 at Steven’s Locks. With temps in the 20’s-30’s, the wind chill readings are going to be frigid. Bundle up!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m still thinking about that amazing powder run I had with my friend Brian on Christmas Day, and that’s got me thinking about mind states. When we go outside to play, we’re chasing after an experience. Perhaps it’s exhilaration, perhaps it’s peacefulness, perhaps it’s that feeling of mind-body unity. We think these experiences come from outside, but the truth of the matter is this: whatever we experience while “doing” is simply a state that arises from within.

We can create these mind states simply by being, simply by sitting and focusing and helping our desired experience arise.

Now, don’t get me wrong: I’m not suggesting we should all quit playing outside. I’m not suggesting we give up exercise. Our bodies benefit from movement in a way that our minds can’t recreate.

I am merely saying that we can learn to bring forth the emotional experiences we chase. Yes, it’s easier and more fun to achieve exhilaration (for example) by shredding powder. But chasing powder carries the possibility of disappointment. Meditating on exhilaration does not. Incorporating mindstate cultivation into your life will allow you to achieve the same mental states as your powder-shredding friends while you sit behind your desk at work.

So, the next time you’re having an epic day doing whatever, really notice how that feels in your mind-body. Take some time, not just seconds, to notice how that feeling manifests and how you can recreate it when you’re just sitting on your butt. Your experiences are nothing more than your mind states, and your mind states can be changed by the conscious exercise of your will. Endless powder days, nuking wind days, and perfect dirt live within you. All you have to do is learn how to access them. Enjoy the awesomeness within. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I stepped outside to look at the weather, and was almost eaten by Gmork. Well, not really, but the Nothing is definitely overhead, forming a big gray bowl over the Gorge. Expect the Nothing to stick around all day with sticking snow (above 500′) and mixed precip after 7am with flurries possible through 7pm. Higher elevations might get an inch or two of snow – this isn’t a heavy band of precip. Just enough to freshen things up. Temps today will be in the mid 30’s all day. Building east wind after 4pm. No rainbows.

Tomorrow starts out with Nothing, possibly breaking up a bit in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the low to mid 30’s in the afternoon. Increasing easterlies. No rainbows. Thursday starts off with Nothing and probably clears up by afternoon as the air mass dries out. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and the low 30’s in the afternoon. Strong easterlies. No rainbows. Ditto for each day through Sunday. Frozen Gorge waterfalls are likely. Next chance for precip is Tuesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

In really disturbing news, a woman was murdered at Family Man Staging Area recently, after all this snow fell. The murder, given that the gates were locked, somehow happened inside closed gates. The sheriff’s department hasn’t released details, so we don’t know if this was an isolated incident, a random act of violence, or what. Please keep this unnamed woman and her friends and family in your heart. Now, on to trail conditions…

We’ve talked a lot about freeze thaw… remember… if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, you should ride… Let’s talk about this upcoming cold snap. Many of our trails are, sadly, under snow right now. However, lower Syncline may clear up during this cold snap. If it does, be mindful that because of southern exposure, it will thaw during the day. That said, if you get out and ride it early in the morning, it will be frozen-enough. Your other option, of course, is any gravel road, or the Petersburg Loop east of The Dalles, where there’s no gravel. I tried riding in the West Hills of Portland yesterday. There was more snow there than in the Gorge. I was wet, cold, sweaty and happy, because I got to ride my bike outside. Yay.
