Monday. Cold snap and chicken stock.

DSC_2992-Edit
At 5am, it was clear on Mt. Hood, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we had some clouds and a few flurries move in today. It’s possible we’ll see up to an inch of snow this morning before the precip fades out this afternoon, leaving the mountain sunny. The snow level today will be around 500′ with temps at 5000′ maxing out in the mid 20’s. Wind will be NW 20-25 in the morning, fading to NW 15-20 in the afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow looks mostly clear with a few periods of clouds and isolated snow flurries possible. The snow level will be 500′ all day long with 5000′ temps in the upper teens to low 20’s. Wind tomorrow will be NW 10-15 all day.

Wednesday looks sunny with the snow level at the surface. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid teens. Wind Wednesday will be N 15 early and NE 10-20 in the afternoon. A big inversion develops on Thursday, with mountain temps warming above surface temps in many locations. Expect sunshine on the hill with 5000′ temps in the mid 20’s early and low 30’s in the afternoon. East wind at 20+.

There’s a bit of a question going into next weekend. Temps on the mountain depend on the depth of the Columbia Basin cold pool. At one point, it looked like we’d see temps in the low 40’s. Now it’s not so clear, with the cold pool deep enough that the ski hills stay cold. In other words, there’s no predicting temps for the ski hills after Thursday. One thing I can say is that there’s really no precipitation in the forecast through next weekend.

Gorge Wind Forecast

As expected, the models were a little optimistic on the switch from east wind to west wind. We still have easterlies at 15mph at Rooster this morning. If the models are right today, the wind will switch to W 10-13 this afternoon. Hmph. Maybe. Expect light and variable wind tonight, going to light E tomorrow morning and E 25 by tomorrow afternoon. Wednesday looks like E 40. Thursday, Friday and Saturday all look like E 50. With temps sub-freezing, that should make for 1) nice frozen waterfalls and 2) f’ing cold wind chill readings.

Random Morning Thoughts

We’re headed into a big cold snap here in the Gorge. And that means it’s time to make a huge pot of chicken stock. Why do we do this now? Because the Gorge is your refrigerator, especially if you’re up high enough where you can throw that pot of chicken stock into the snow to cool off.

No longer do you have to buy bags of ice to cool your five gallon pot of stock. No longer do you have to warm up everything else in your fridge. Nope. Now you can just cook up a big pot of soup, leave it outside, and let Mother Nature do your work for you. See, there’s something positive that comes out of all this cold weather. Best day for chicken stock making looks like Wednesday or Thursday, with overnight temps down into the teens or low 20’s.

We call this “thinking outside the box”… or perhaps “thinking outside the icebox” is a better way to put it.

We often overlook solutions that come from outside our experience. We tend to problem-solve based on past experience. We think, “I did this before, and it (kinda) worked, so I’ll do it again.” In many cases, our past experience isn’t enough to help us through current problems. We need a different perspective, one that’s so different that we can’t even comprehend it. Putting something outside to cool, for example, is just not a part of United States culture.

To live the fullest, most creative, most fulfilling life possible, it’s important to explore lots of perspectives. The Google can help with that. So can hanging out with people from different cultures. Or reading books. It doesn’t matter how you widen your perspective. It’s just important to realize that it’s very difficult to do without outside help – you are, after all, enculturated to a specific way of being. Open your world, open your heart, and open your mind, and your experience of life will open up too. Now go eat some soup and have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

As of 5:30am, it was clear on Mt. Hood and cloudy in the Gorge, meaning the Nothing has made an appearance, and will most likely stick around all day long. There’s a chance of a few light snow flurries or mixed precip before noon. Expect temps today in the low 30’s early and the mid to upper 30’s in the afternoon. Light east wind may or may not switch to west wind late in the day. 13% chance of rainbows. 99% chance of icy roads tonight.

Tuesday starts off with the Nothing cloud and stays that way all day. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Temps will be much colder if you live above the Nothing. Light east wind picks up to E 25 at Rooster in the afternoon. No rainbows. Yes icy roads.

Wednesday starts off with the Nothing and may end up with a few sunbreaks. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Strong east wind for your Portland commute. No rainbows. Yes icy roads. If the models are right for Thursday, we’ll see temps in the teens. Brrrr. It looks like the Gorge will stay sub-freezing with strong east wind through the weekend.

Road and Mountain Biking

No, please don’t do it. It’s snowy anyway, but once the snow is gone, if you shred Syncline, you’ll be riding in freeze-thaw mud. You’ll destroy the trails. You’ll make singletrack into braided roads, and people will have to come fix the mess you made. No, no, no. Take your fat bike and go ride on the snow. Leave Syncline alone!
