It’s a clear and sunny morning on Mt. Hood, and it’s one of those days where every skier and snowboarder is headed for the hills to take in a spectacular day. Meadows opened Heather Canyon for the first time in two years yesterday, and I can assure you that it was nothing shy of 100% epic. Skibowl opened the Outback yesterday, and the video they posted is also spectacular. I have nothing exciting to report from Timberline. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Looks like we’ll see a sunny morning on Mt. Hood with some high clouds moving in this afternoon and a few flurries tonight. The snow level today will be at the surface. We’ll see maybe 1” of snow tonight, likely after midnight. Temps at 5000′ today will be in the low teens, warming up to the mid 20’s tonight. Light wind early, SW wind at 10-15 in the afternoon, rising to SW 20 overnight.

Tomorrow starts off cloudy with just a few flurries, followed by a period of snowfall from late morning to around midnight. The snow level will be at the surface early, rising to 500′ or so after midnight. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid to upper 20’s all day. You can expect .2-.4” water value (WV), for 2-4” of new snow between 10am and midnight, with light flurries after that. Wind tomorrow will be SW 20 early, swinging to W 20-25 in the afternoon and turning to NW 20-25 after midnight.
Monday sees scattered flurries mixed in with lots of sunshine. The snow level will fluctuate between 0′ and 1000′. No accumulation. NW wind at 20 in the morning turns to NNW 20-25 after noon. Tuesday looks clear and cold early, becoming overcast in the afternoon. It’s possible we’ll see some snow on Wednesday, but models are trending drier. We’ll have to wait and see. After that, it looks sunny and increasingly warmer in the mountains as a strong inversion develops.

Gorge Wind Forecast
We have some light easterlies blowing through the Gorge this morning, and they will pick up to E 30+ by this evening. Tomorrow starts with E 40, backs off to E 20 in the afternoon, and supposedly goes to light and variable overnight. If the weather models are correct, and they often are not in this situation, we’ll see light west wind on Monday. Tuesday looks like a transition day, and then we’ll see slowly building easterlies that get to 50-60 by Friday.
Random Morning Thoughts
I was skiing Heather Canyon with my friend Brian yesterday, and we were chasing after the most awesome powder seen on Mt. Hood in years. I realized at one point that I was doing that powder chasing thing, driven by the hoards of people chasing the same thing. I told Brian to make me stop, and so we did, at the top of a field of bottomless, untracked powder. We stopped, we got really mindful, and we dropped in. Oh wow. That was one spectacular run. The snow hissed along my skis. I floated. I search out my line. I was delighted and surprised when my tree run opened into a wide-open stretch of untracked snow. It was a perfect run, and it is burned into my mind for ever.
This makes me think about what it is that creates long-lasting memories. It’s clear that we don’t remember most things. I’m sure there’s a ton of research on this subject, but I think it’s more fun to look into our own minds and see what was different about the moments we remember. Take a moment and see what it is about some of your memories that made them stick.
For me, these moments tend to have high emotional impact, either positive or negative. And emotional impact tends to keep us in the moment, keeping us present – it’s hard to think about your grocery list or your past or future when you’re luxuriating in delight or wallowing in sorrow. If emotions and presence are tied to the creation of memories, and we want to have a positive view of the world, it’s important to really be present when good things are happening. If bad shit’s happening, go ahead, bring up that grocery list. Maybe that’ll reduce the long-term impact!
Joking aside, there’s stellar snow on the mountain right now. See if you can really be there for each great turn, whether it’s on the corduroy or in the powder. Revel in the company of your riding partner. Really soak up your love for that person. Make lots of positive memories, and that will make you a happier person overall. Happiness is awesome. Gorge Weather Forecast
I just stepped outside to look at the sky, and I couldn’t see a single star or the nearly full moon. With clear sky above Mt. Hood today, that can mean only one thing: The Nothing is here. So, expect an overcast day today with a few snow flurries after 1am. It’s likely going to just be a dusting. Temps today will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Increasing easterlies. No rainbows.
Tomorrow starts of with the Nothing combined with some freezing fog, followed by light snowfall between 11am and 7pm. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early. NOAA claims we’ll see a high tomorrow in the mid 30’s. I’m not buying it. Expect 1-3” of new snow in Hood River tomorrow. I guess it’s possible we could see mixed precip, but my money is on wet snow that sticks to our freezing cold roads. Strong east wind early could mean tough visibility on I-84 in the early afternoon. It’ll be better later. Snowy roads. No rainbows.
Monday sees low clouds with a few flurries in the morning and a few sprinkles in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon (but only if the wind really switches from east to west). Light wind. Snowy/Icy roads. 34% chance of rainbows.
Tuesday looks dry and cold with the Nothing. It’s possible we’ll see snow snow/freezing rain/mixed stuff on Wednesday if the Euro is right. The GFS keeps us dry. After that, we look dry and cold with frozen waterfalls increasingly likely as temps struggle to climb above freezing through next weekend. In an interesting note, the surface pressure model has eastern WA at 1044mb on Friday. That’s some seriously high high pressure, and is clearly a result of the legalization of marijuana in Washington.

Road and Mountain Biking
I’ve been asked to relay some information to you: There’s approximately 18” of snow at the top of Hospital Hill. That’s 2000′. That means that all trails around that elevation are in full winter mode. Here’s a second piece of information: with temps dropping below freezing every night for the foreseeable future, all trails exposed to open air should be considered closed, unless you’re riding very, very early in the morning. Once those trails see daylight, they’ll thaw. At that point, you’ll be doing massive damage by riding them. Please do NOT ride Syncline, Whoopdee, or any other trail exposed to the open air during the next week. Please educate your friends. Plus, have you ever tried to clean refrozen trail dirt off your bike? No? I don’t recommend it. Please don’t ride Syncline this week.

Upcoming Events
It’s hard to say what’s happening around here this weekend, due to holiday changes. I know there’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am today. On Sunday, we usually have three free yoga classes: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s also pickup touch rugby on Sunday at 3pm at the Mosier School and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm, or is it 5:30pm.
