Monday. POWDER all week long. Yeah!

DSC_0139
It’s dumping snow on Mt. Hood this morning, and the dumping snow will continue, oh, for the better part of the next three days. I know. You’re pretty bummed about that, aren’t you? You don’t like powder skiing one bit, do ou? The dumping snow is going to be mixed in with some very strong wind at times, so be prepared for that if you’re headed to the mountain. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

The snow level today will be 1000′ early, rising to … well, it’s difficult. Today’s system is moving through so fast that I wonder if the sounding model (the one I use for snow levels) is missing the period of warmth that may accompany the system. So, let’s say this: the snow level will rise to 5000′ or possibly briefly a bit higher, between 10am and 1pm. Most likely we’ll see snow, but a short period of sleet is possible. Anyway, the snow level will drop back to 3500′ by 1pm and 1000′ overnight. We’ll see .8”+ water value (WV) between 7am and 4pm, for 7-10” of new snow. We’ll see another .6”-1” WV tonight (orographic snowfall is difficult to predict), for 7-12” of new by tomorrow morning. Wind today will be SW 15 early, rising to SW 30 by 10am, and then switching to a potentially lift-stopping W 60-70 around 1pm. The wind will slowly fade to W 45 by midnight.

Tomorrow starts off with orographic snow flurries and possibly a few sunbreaks, followed by heavy snow after 4pm. The snow level will be 1500′ or so early, falling to 500′ in the evening. We’ll see flurries during the day, followed by 1-1.5” WV overnight, for 12-18” of new snow. Wind tomorrow will be WNW 40 early, fading to SW 10 by the afternoon, picking up to SW 20 in the evening and going to a snow-damaging WNW 50 after midnight.

Wednesday starts off with heavy snowfall which continues all day before fading to flurries in the evening. The snow level Wednesday will be around 500′ all day. We’ll see 1” WV between 4am and 4pm for 10-14” of new snow. We’ll see another .5” WV in the evening for 5-7” of dry, light, fluffy powder. Wind on Wednesday will likely slow down the lifts: WNW 45 all day, fading to WNW 35 in the evening.

Thursday will probably see a few flurries mixed with a lot of sun. The snow level will be 500′ all day. Wind will be NW 30 early, NW 15 mid-morning, and W 20 in the evening. Friday looks sunny and cold. Next chance for precip is late Saturday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have east wind in the Gorge this morning, driven by a E .10 cross-Cascade gradient. The wind will switch to west sometime around 11am as an strong low pressure system moves over us. Expect westerlies at 30-40 with gusts to 50 or more. Expect trees to fall down, especially in the western Gorge where trees aren’t used to strong westerlies. Expect the power to go out (again – mine is out right now). The strongest wind will be between 11am and 4pm, with lingering westerlies at 30+ after that.

By tomorrow morning, we’ll have westerlies at 20-23 in the western Gorge and 26-30 in the eastern Gorge. The wind will fade to light and variable after 1pm. Another low pressure system moves over us tomorrow night around 7pm, driving westerlies at 30-40+ in the evening.

Wednesday looks like 23-26 early and light and variable wind after noon. Thursday looks light and variable.

Random Morning Thoughts

I don’t have much time this morning. I, like you, want to go ski some powder. And I have to drive to Portland later. And, oh, there’s the slight problem of the power being out at my house. I’m sitting at Sheri’s this morning telecommuting. No, I didn’t order pie, thanks for asking. However, one of the folks on the pro patrol recommended the cinnamon roll French toast. Anyway, I digress, maybe because they put an entire pot of coffee in front of me?

“People don’t change”. You hear that a lot, don’t you? It’s not true. I’m thinking about that this morning. Last time I had no power and I was supposed to work, I was super stressed out. This morning I was slightly stressed, but more excited about the problem-solving aspect of what was going on. That’s change. I’m kinda proud of myself. And being proud of myself makes me a happier, more well-adjusted person. The same thing is true for you – giving yourself kudos will make you happier.

You can take advantage of the passage of time to be kind to yourself. You will, inevitably, experience the same situation with an interval of time in between the first occurrence and following occurrences. When you get that sense of deja-vu, notice how your reactions have changed. Notice how you’ve changed. Stop and give yourself props for your new approach to the world. And if your approach hasn’t changed, notice that, and see what you can do to create a better reaction.

Change does happen. And when it doesn’t, there’s an opportunity for growth. You can change, and you can be more at peace, even when the power goes out on an epic powder day. Be good to yourself. You really are awesome, I promise. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

As I said, it was a marginal call for this morning’s winter storm. It’s not even close this morning in Hood River, with rain falling in the sky. It’s possible, although unlikely, that we’ll see some non-sticking snow as east gradients pull in cold air, but I’m not betting on that. So, expect rain this morning and showers this afternoon and evening. The big news today is nuking west wind between 11am and 4pm. Keep that in mind for your commute to or from Portland today – given the saturated soil, trees will likely be falling on I-84 and SR-14. Also, icy roads are a possibility late tonight if the sky clears as forecast. 99% chance of rainbows (yes, there was one yesterday and the day before and the day before that).

Tomorrow starts out partly cloudy. Given the partly cloudy sky in the morning, it’s likely roads will be icy due to radiational cooling, even if the temps are a little above freezing. Clouds move in during the afternoon with rain or mixed precip down low and snow above 500′, possibly 4-8” or more for the upper valleys. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind early, light and variable in the afternoon, and nuking overnight.

Wednesday looks snowy/rainy all day long, with precip ending after midnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s all day, dropping below freezing in the evening. Folks above 500′ will likely see quite a bit of snow on Wednesday. At river level, west wind will likely keep us from seeing accumulating snow. That said, we may see an inch or two overnight as the westerlies fade and the temp drops below freezing down to the surface. Moderate westerlies early, light wind after noon. 75% chance of rainbows.

Thursday looks partly cloudy and cold. Friday looks cold and sunny. Saturday looks sunny and cold early with clouds late. Next round of precip is Saturday night, and that could fall as mixed precip of some sort here in the Gorge.

Road and Mountain Biking

Even the diehards are riding in the gym. That said, there’s no gravel on the Petersburg loop out in The Dalles. If you live in the Gorge, you could try riding there. That ride is really quite pleasant and has a great hill for doing repeats. Also, I heard there’s a pho shop in The Dalles so you could ride and then have a nice meal.

Upcoming Events

Happy Monday. This being a holiday week, it’s hard to know what events are happening. The regularly scheduled Monday events follow: 1pm Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall. 6:30pm community yoga at the Town Hall. 6:30pm Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center. 6:30pm community yoga at Yoga Samadhi. Tomorrow is the winter solstice. Tomorrow night at 6:30, there’s a community meditation at Yoga Samadhi (the monastics are out of town on winter retreat). There’s community yoga at the Mosier Senior Center at 7pm, pickup touch rugby at the ball fields by Jackson Park at 5pm, and $12 prime rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm. There’s another community meditation at Flow Yoga at 8:15am Wednesday morning.

Have an awesome day today!
