Monday. Hot, not-windy. Less hot, really-windy. And a ton of cool events.

Random Morning Thoughts

Wow. I received a lot of responses on yesterday’s random thought about the lack of friendly interaction between people, especially people who are out doing things they love (biking, hiking, etc.) So maybe we can institute a bit of change. If you’re out hiking, biking, kiting, windsurfing, or doing whatever you do when the Gorge is your gym, smile at people. Wave (no, not with the middle finger – use all 4 fingers plus your thumb). Say hello. Your choice of interaction can depend on your level of sociability. Shy like me? Just a bit of eye contact, a smile, or a nod is enough. 3-2-1 Go! Go forth and be friendly!

Do you find this forecast useful? Hooray! It’s pledge drive month!

Thanks for coming here for your forecast. It’s time for the annual pledge drive! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free!” It is, but it takes lots of time. It’s my job, and you’re my employers! Here’s the deal: Every day someone has to pledge. If not, no website forecast the next day: only the people on the email list get their forecast. Want on that list? Make a donation. Do I save you gas? Find you more fun? Entertain you? The email list is not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for the next year! Anything over the minimum feeds my coffee and bicycle addictions and makes me feel loved, and god knows we all need to feel loved. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my photo. And thank you so much for your support.

Gorge Wind

Today is starting off light, but a sneaky .05 gradient means the wakeboarding conditions won’t last all that long. Expect the morning wind to build to 8-12 from Hood River to Mosier, with less further west and further east. We may see the wind lull to near-nothing midday, and then we’ll see 13-15 late this afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River.

Tomorrow starts with 13-15 near Hood River, filling in from Stevenson to Doug’s in the afternoon and maybe picking up to 15-18 after 4pm. But we might see thunderstorms late in the day, which would cause the wind to be gusty and unreliable and maybe not there at all for periods of time.

The overall weather setup improves on Wednesday with high pressure offshore, a trough along the coast, and a heat low in the desert. Expect Dawn Patrol at 24-28 from the Hatch to Mosier, maybe at LyleRowenaDoug’s too. The wind should build to 28-32 by late morning.

Thursday and Friday also look quite windy. It’s still a little far out to call the wekeend. If you are going to be on the water Thursday, watch out for Lasers (little sailboats) because Thursday is the Gorge Laser Blowout. Poor little Lasers. They’re designed for light wind, not for Thursday.

I write down the coast forecast every time I think it’s going to be windy out there, and then I forget to share it with you guys. Today I did not forget. The next three days, at least, look windy. Numbers are North/Central/South. Today will be 15-20/20-25/30+ with a 4′ NW swell at 9 seconds. Tomorrow will be 20/20-25/30+ with NW 4@8. Wednesday looks like 15-20/25-30/30+ NW 5′. Huh. That wasn’t so hard, now, was it?

Gorge Weather

Today’s going to be a hot one, so get out and do your recreating thing early and then hit a swimming hole later on. Expect sunshine all day, with a few cumulus clouds over the Cascades in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low 90’s in the afternoon. Tuesday looks very similar, temp-wise, with a possibility of thunder, or at least lots more clouds, in the afternoon, for a 74% chance of a pretty sunset. Wednesday looks cooler and very windy, with temps in the low 60’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Go ride early today! Today’s recommended swimming hole is Tucker Bridge. I checked it out yesterday with some friends from Portland, and it was lovely, especially the rope swing.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Tonight is the Ride Around the Gorge mellow bike ride leaving Sorosis Park in The Dalles at 5:30 and cruising for an hour or two at a mellow pace. At 6:30 tonight, Yoga Samadhi has free community yoga. In Portland tonight, there are road and short track mtb races at PIR, and it’s Ladies Night, with free women’s bike racing clinics at 5:45.

Tuesday is a very busy night. There is Triathlon practice at 6:15pm at Mayer Park. It’s Ladies Night at Big Winds at 5:30, with swag for all the ladies who show up. There’s (hot) outdoor music at the Ruins at Springhouse from 5-9. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5-9. In Cascade Locks at the Marina Pavilion tomorrow night, Gorge Owned has a Green Drinks titled “Bikes Mean Business”, talking about bicycle tourism. Also tomorrow night, there’s pickup rugby at 5:30 at the Hood River Marina.

Wednesday is the White Salmon Riverfest and Symposium, with really cheap raft trips for locals (Hood River, Skamania County, and maybe others) at 2pm, a yummy meal, and a viewing of the (supposedly excellent) movie DamNation. Call Wet Planet to get signed up. It’s $27.50 for everything.

This upcoming Friday-Sunday is both Kiteboarding for Cancer (Hood River Event Site) and the Laser Masters North American Championships (Cascade Locks). And Skibowl has an uphill/downhill mountain bike race.

Have an awesome day today!
