Random Morning Thoughts

Random thought #1: I think the thing I like most about fireworks is not the pretty colors. It’s the puff of smoke in the middle of the ball of pretty colors. Random thought #2: I was out at a 4th of July party last night, and someone came up to me and said, “You know, Temira, your forecast has been really off lately. You haven’t even been close.” I said, “Oh, I’m sorry you’re not satisfied. Would you like your money back?” He replied, “Oh, I didn’t give you any money, I just use your website.” I thought for a minute, and replied, “Oh, well, would you like me to pay you to not use it?” Just to clarify, I’m totally okay with folks “just using” the website. That’s why I post a free forecast. Keep using it. I’m honored that you do. =)

Pledge Drive is suspended for today due to the generosity of so many of you. Thank you!

Thanks for coming here for your forecast. It’s time for the summer pledge drive! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free!” It is, but it takes lots of time. It’s my job, and you’re my employers! Here’s the deal: Every day someone has to pledge. If not, no website forecast the next day: only the people on the email list get their forecast. Want on that list? Make a donation. Do I save you gas? Find you more fun? Entertain you? The email list is not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for the next year! Anything over the minimum feeds my coffee and bicycle addictions and makes me feel loved, and god knows we all need to feel loved. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my photo. And thank you so much for your support.

Gorge Wind

We’re starting today off with moderate gradients of .06 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc). Back in the day, that’d be nothing, but in this age of kites and super-awesome slalom gear, that’ll drive just enough wind to get you on the water. Expect gusty 13-16 this morning near Hood River, holding through much of the day and picking up at Cascade Locks mid-morning. By 2pm, as an upper level low (ULL) approaches BC, the wind will pick up to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s, picking up further to 21-24 after 3pm at Stevenson, likely not at Hood River, and also picking up from Mosier to Rufus. Arlington, late in the day, should get 15-18.

Tomorrow starts with 10-13 from Hood River to The Dalles, hovering in that range through much of the day as another weak ULL meanders around off the WA/BC coasts. As that ULL goes bye-bye mid-afternoon, letting high pressure build off the coast, we’ll see the wind pick up to 15-18 from Stevenson to Doug’s, possibly getting a bit stronger.

High pressure builds inland Monday morning for a light start, but a better setup Monday afternoon will give us 17-21 or more. If the long range models are correct, Tuesday will be windier than this weekend, and Wednesday and Thursday will be very windy.

Next weekend, July 11-13, is Kiteboarding for Cancer. It’s not too late for you to volunteer, participate, donate, or bake cookies for the athletes.

Gorge Weather

It’s looking mighty smoky out there this morning, which leads me to believe there’s a fire somewhere, but the closest fire I could find was near Bend. Anyway, we’ll see partly cloudy sky today as an upper level low approaches BC. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Tomorrow looks very similar to today, with a touch warmer afternoon temps and much higher humidity. Monday looks a lot like Sunday: partly cloudy, low 60’s early, upper 80’s in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Gunsight ridge is snow-free, but there are lots of downed trees on the trail. No word on Boulder Lakes.

River Levels

The White Salmon is at 2.75′. The Klickitat is at 1170cfs. The John Day dam is putting out 209ishkcfs and The Dalles dam is reading 196kcfs. Columbia river temp is 64 degrees at The Dalles Dam.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

If you’re looking for something to do today, the Hood River Running Club has a weekly Saturday trail run meeting at the bottom of Post Canyon at 8am. That’s about it for today, but there’s a Swap Meet at Windance tomorrow from 9am to 1pm, and Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon has free community yoga at 9am tomorrow.

Tomorrow afternoon, there’s pickup touch rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 3, and there’s a social bike ride leaving Mountain View Cycles at 5:30 and heading to the new cider house in Mosier.

If you had plans to check out the Kids Adventure Games today or tomorrow at Skibowl, those plans are unfortunateley off, because the Kids Adventure Games are cancelled. But you could take the kids to Cascade Locks today and tomorrow to check out the Wind Youth Regatta sailboat races.

Have an awesome day today!
