Random Morning Thoughts
I slept in this morning. Sorry. Bad day to sleep in, with lots and lots of people wanting a holiday forecast. Oh well. I have a strong belief that it’s important to listen to the body. If it needs rest, give it rest, or the effects will begin to show in your mind. Or at least, that’s how it works for me!
Attention: Pledge Drive is suspended through the holiday weekend due to the overwhelming generosity of you people.
Thanks for coming here for your forecast. It’s time for the summer pledge drive! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free!” It is, but it takes lots of time. It’s my job, and you’re my employers! Here’s the deal: Every day someone has to pledge. If not, no website forecast the next day: only the people on the email list get their forecast. Want on that list? Make a donation. Do I save you gas? Find you more fun? Entertain you? The email list is not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for the next year! Anything over the minimum feeds my coffee and bicycle addictions and makes me feel loved, and god knows we all need to feel loved. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my photo. And thank you so much for your support.
Tomorrow’s forecast status:
Thank you Stephen B., Joshua Y., and Jim S. for the holiday weekend forecasts.
And thank you all in advance for supporting what I do here.

Gorge Wind
I checked the wind on iWindsurf yesterday, and it was windy. When I went to the beach, the wind was still there! Yay! Happy day! Windsurfing is fun. And not only is windsurfing fun, it’s contest-able, and today is the Freedom Frenzy. Head on over to the Hatchery to watch this semi-spur-of-the-moment contest. Heats start at 10am.
The wind today won’t be as strong as yesterday, but it will likely be a touch stronger than tomorrow. We’ll see somewhat gusty 15-18 this morning, slowly rising to 21-24 by early afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier as this weather system clears the area. After 2pm, the wind will pick up to 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus, with 15-18 at Arlington.
Tomorrow starts with 13-15 near Hood River, rising to 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier midday and filling in at the Lyle/Rowena stretch of river in the afternoon. Sunday starts off light, as a weak low pressure system sits off the coast. As that system moves inland and high pressure builds in behind it, we’ll see 15-18 in the late afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to Hood River.
Monday looks 50/50, but the general pattern next week is “Classic Gorge Setup”. Cross your fingers that the long range models are correct. And remember, next weekend, July 11-13, is Kiteboarding for Cancer. It’s not too late for you to volunteer, participate, donate, or bake cookies for the athletes.
Finally, my thoughts are with all the friends and family of Dale “Wiley” Johnson who passed away kiteboarding at Lincoln City yesterday. From NWKite: “Dale Johnson (aka Wiley) was a friendly, fun loving guy. He was well liked at the fire department and passionate about the things he got into such as dirt biking, welding, and kiteboarding. He was a good kiter and sailed LC a lot. He started about ten years ago and still always wanted to talk kiting.” I am so sad for everyone who knew him, and for our entire wind community. Be well today, all of you. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Gorge Weather
It’s partly cloudy this morning as yet another weak weather system moves through. A stronger weather system will move far north of us over the weekend, for muggy weather, but no rain or rainbows, here in the Gorge. Temps will be in the low 60’s this morning (with 71% humidity, yikes), and in the low 80’s this afternoon. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy as a system swings north of us. Temps will be in the upper 50’s in the morning and low 80’s in the afternoon. Sunday looks just a touch warmer than Saturday and quite a bit muggier.
Road and Mountain Biking
When I went to the Post n’ Pint last night, the trails were still in Post Canyon. They were getting pretty dry, though, with lots of ball bearings scattered about. Some rain would be nice, but not until the cherries are off the trees. I’m still looking for information on Gunsight and Boulder Lakes trails. Has anyone attempted them in the last week?
As for the road biking, it looks like Sunday is lightest wind day this holiday weekend. So plan on that day for your big ride.
