6/7 Gorge wind, rain and events

Good morning, It’s only 57 degrees in the Columbia River right now, and your body isn’t designed for that. Promotion wetsuits are. With thousands of wetsuits in stock and all sorts of not-so-stock sizes (and alterations on site), you’re going to find the perfect suit if you stop by. Promotion isn’t just wetsuits: it’s rashguards,…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Good morning,

It’s only 57 degrees in the Columbia River right now, and your body isn’t designed for that. Promotion wetsuits are. With thousands of wetsuits in stock and all sorts of not-so-stock sizes (and alterations on site), you’re going to find the perfect suit if you stop by. Promotion isn’t just wetsuits: it’s rashguards, booties, hoods, beanies, shorts, vests and PFDs. Cold water suits are on sale now. Protect yourself from the chilly river the local way: Promotion, based here since 1985. Two short-sleeve rashguards are up for grabs. If you’re interested in winning, sign up for the email with a donation of $10 or more and you’ll have a chance to win.

In the wind forecast today, we start off with east wind at 10-15 at Stevenson and Rooster switching to west wind at 15-18 near Hood River and 27-30 east of Maryhill after 2pm. Before the westerlies kick in today, we’ll see rain. Lots of rain. Up to half an inch of rain. On Friday, west wind starts off at 15-18 near Hood River, picking up to 21-24 in the afternoon, but a possible thunderstorms will possibly render the forecast useless. Saturday morning starts off with west wind at 23-26, picking up to 26-30 from Hood River eastward by mid-morning. Sunday also looks quite windy.

For fun tonight, there are free standup paddle demos and lessons at the Gorge Kayak School in the Nichols Boat Basin, brought to you by Windance. Actually, looking out my window right now, I don’t think that sounds fun. Just cold. Also tonight the Pint and pint (because I bet it’ll be too wet to run the Post part of that bike ride), a recovery ride leaving Disco at 5pm (brr), a movie about climbers from Oregon doing good things in Nepal at Columbia Center for the Arts and an award-winning documentary about Lyme Disease at Andrews.

Coming up tomorrow night, it’s the annual Trail Builder Appreciation Dinner, happening at Family Man at 6pm. Bring your kids, your bikes, and a potluck dish to share, and come say thanks to everyone who’s helped bring back the trails from this winter’s ice storm. That means you. Everyone come!

On Saturday, there’s a work party at Doug’s Beach, and on Sunday, there’s a work party at the easyCLIMB trail in Cascade Locks. Both of those work parties start at 9am.

For fun on Saturday, there’s the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic crit race in downtown Hood River, there’s the Black Dog Dual Sport offroad motorcycle ride, there’s a family mountain bike campout in Cascade Locks, and there’s the White Salmon Riverfest with $25 dollar rafting and Condit Dam tours for local (why wouldn’t you? That’s cheap!). On Saturday night, surfer Gerry Lopez is giving a slideshow at Big Winds (pupus and bevvies provided).

Finally, it’s cattle roundup time at Hospital Hill. Please ride elsewhere until they are done on June 15th. Why? Do you really want to be riding up the trail when cowboys are driving cattle down the trail? No. I didn’t think you want to be the victim of a mindless cow stampede. And if you must ride there anyway, leave your dog at home.

Have an awesome day today!
