Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Good morning!

We saw a bit of a break in the weather this morning, but that was short-lived, as it’s already back to snow on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be at 1000’ this morning, rising to 4000’ this afternoon and dropping back to 3000’ this evening. I still think there’s a pretty good chance we’ll see some mixed rain and snow (or at least an extended period of graupel) on Mt. Hood between 1pm and 4pm, but if it happens, it’ll only be for a few hours, so don’t worry your little head. Models are disagreeing over snowfall amounts, so I’ll split the difference: .4-.6” WV for 4-6” of new by 4pm and another .4-.6” overnight for another 4-6” of new, mostly ending by midnight. Wind will be SW 10-15 early, rising to 20-25 by 1pm and SW 40-45 by 1pm, holding for the rest of the day.

In the Gorge today, we’ll see cold air pulled in by increasing east gradients. Snow should start around 10am, continuing through sometime early tomorrow morning, for 4-6” of new with east wind.

Tomorrow morning on Mt. Hood looks partly cloudy at worst and sunny at best. The freezing level will be 1000’, dropping to 500’ midday. Wind will be W 25-30 early, going to WNW 15-25 midday and dropping to W 5-10 in the afternoon.

All hell breaks loose on Tuesday (if you consider tropical weather hellish). At 4am, the snow level will be 4500’, but by 1pm, it will be 9000’. We might see a few inches of wet snow before the switchover to rain, but it’s not going to stay white for long. We’ll have 1” WV by 1pm, with another 1.5”+ overnight. Wind on Tuesday clocks in at SW 20-25 early, rising to 40-50 by 1pm and swinging to WSW 50+ by 4pm.

Wednesday just looks sucky, with the snow level at 6500’ early, rising to 7500’ by 7am. We’ll see 2-3” of rain between 4am and 4pm and another 2-3” by 4am Thursday, when we should see a switchover to snow. Wind will be WSW 30-35 early, rising to W 45-50 by 10am. Long range models are showing a high pressure system with sunshine and a well-needed break for Friday-Sunday.

For your non-mountain sporting pleasure, expect very high water in the rivers by Wednesday afternoon. Boaters will be rejoicing, and touristy boaters will be over watching the White Salmon carve its way down to bedrock in what used to be Northwestern Lake. If you’re looking to do some community service, think about taking your chainsaw to Post and removing trees that fell during the ice storm, assuming you’re approved to do that… 😉

Have a great day today!
