Good morning!
First off, Tuesday and Wednesday this week are my days off (I get 2 every 14 days), so expect the forecast to be late, probably not until after 9am.
Depending on your point of view, it’s either a good or a bad thing that the weather models have backed off on precipitation amounts for tonight. Yesterday’s runs showed somewhere around .5” of water value. The latest run shows .2-.3” water value. So, today we’ll see the freezing level at 8000’ early, dropping to 6500’ by 1pm and 5000’ by 7pm, continuing to fall overnight. Precip starts around 1pm, most likely starting as rain at the ski resorts, switching over to snow late in the afternoon or early in the evening with flurries overnight. At this point, I think we’ll see 1-2” of snow overnight. Wind today will be WSW 25-30 for most of the day, going to WNW 25-30 around 7pm.
Tomorrow starts off partly cloudy, becoming clear by mid-morning. The freezing level will be at 1500’ early, falling to the surface as the east side of the Cascades starts filling with cold air. Wind tomorrow will be NW 15-25 early, swinging around to E 15-20 in the afternoon. If you’re a tele skier, tomorrow is Tele Tuesday at Skibowl, with demos and lessons and an uphill-downhill race. All proceeds benefit friends of NWAC, except for beer proceeds, which benefit Snowriders.
Wednesday looks clear and cold on Mt. Hood. The strength and elevation of the east winds depends on the depth of the east-side cold pool. Temps start moderating in the afternoon, eventually nearing 32 degrees on the ski slopes.
Thursday looks sunny and warm, with a massive inversion bringing temps near 40 to the ski slopes while the Gorge remains well below freezing.
For you weather watchers out there, the east winds will be blasting through the Gorge on Wednesday, and possibly on Thursday as well. Expect below-freezing temps on the river with easterlies averaging 40ish at Stevenson and 50+ at Rooster Rock. Mountain biking conditions are still reported to be stellar. I’ll let you know after I spend 3 or 4 hours in Post today. =)
