your Gorge and Mt. Hood forecaster

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of what the Gorge has to offer: riding river swell on a foil or windsurf board, carving fresh lines through the snow, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

That’s why in 2006, Temira took it upon themselves to create the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Inaccurate predictions had left too many fellow adventurers caught off-guard and in harm’s way. Temira was determined to change that. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and travelers through the Gorge. With their guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and stay safer on the water, snow, and trails.

But the story doesn’t end there. Temira also authors the TATAS Facebook page – the Gorge’s premier source for microclimate forecasts. When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hey skiers and snowboarders! Mt. Hood picked up about a foot of new snow in this storm cycle, and there’s more snow on the way between now and Tuesday morning. Models give us about 12-18” total between now and the end of the storm cycle mid-morning Tuesday. There’s still quite a bit of range, but there’s definitely snow on the way. After Tuesday, the weather looks warmer for a good long stretch – a bit of warm, sunny spring skiing next week followed by potentially wet, warm weather in the extended. Fingers crossed that warm-wet combo doesn’t come to pass!

Today, Saturday, won’t be warm and wet. It’ll be snowy and cool. The snow level will be 4000′ this morning, 2500′ this afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. Temps start near 30F and fall during the day. Models give us about 0.2” water equivalent (WE) during the day for 1-2” of new. After 4pm, another 0.4” WE is in the cards. Let’s call that 4-5” decent powder. Wind: SW 25-55 during the day, WSW 40-45 in the afternoon, and W 35 after midnight. That much wind from that direction should enhance snowfall rates.

Sunday starts out with a brief bout of snow, turns partly cloudy, and returns to snow overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3500′ midday, and 3000′ overnight. In the Gorge: way lower. About 0.1” WE falls prior to lifts opening for an inch of powder. Snow returns late evening, and 0.4” to 0.6” WE is forecast overnight. Call that 4-6” new snow by Monday morning. Sunday wind: W 35 early drops to SW 5-10 in the afternoon and builds to SW 15-25 after midnight.

There’s more range in the snow totals for Monday, but it does look snowy. Up to a foot of new may fall in that 24 hours period with the snow level in the 3000-400′ range. Wind: probably moderate – under 30mph. By Tuesday afternoon, the weather turns sunny, and by Wednesday morning, it’ll be warm and sunny. That holds for a bit. Extended models suggest temps will remain above freezing at 5000′ for up to 10 days, and they do bring in some rain during that period. But hey, extended forecasts are notoriously inaccurate, so keep your fingers crossed. And in the meantime, get some of this fresh snow!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A long stretch of easterlies is in the picture starting Monday, but there’s not much happening between now and then. Saturday started with pressures of 29.65/29.75 for an easterly gradient of 0.10. Iwash (Rooster) opened the day with 19mph, and Viento and Stevenson were both less than 10mph. As a low moves into BC today, the wind will turn onshore. We’ll see gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to Viento or perhaps Swell (it’ll be super gusty there), 5-10mph or less between Hood River and Doug’s, and gusty 18-22 from Avery to Boardman for a few hours midday. After that, the wind drops. River flow over the last 24 hours was 93-157kcfs, river temp is 46.04F, and high temp forecast is 44F.

Sunday starts with light west wind, less than 10mph. The wind quickly turns calm. Afternoon: easterlies at 10-15mph at Stevenson and Iwash. High temp: 42F and partly cloudy. Monday looks quite wet, or potentially snowy. The day starts with easterlies at 35-40mph at Iwash and 20-25mph at Stevenson. Usable wind won’t last long. By 1pm, Stevenson drops to 10-15mph and Iwash drops to 20-25mph. High temp: mid 30s and wet. Easterlies (probably) continue all the way through Friday. Stay warm out there!

Cycling Update

Trails have been a mix of frozen, hoar-frost (unrideable), and freeze-thaw. When it’s wet and muddy, or when there are freeze-thaw conditions, please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
