Friday: sun-sational for a week or so…

The best wind forecast for the Gorge.
The best snow forecast for Mt. Hood.
The best weather forecast. Period.

Meet Temira,
your Gorge and Mt. Hood forecaster

Temira with a giant pumpkin at Mt. Hood and Columbia Gorge

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of what the Gorge has to offer: riding river swell on a foil or windsurf board, carving fresh lines through the snow, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

That’s why in 2006, Temira took it upon themselves to create the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Inaccurate predictions had left too many fellow adventurers caught off-guard and in harm’s way. Temira was determined to change that. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and travelers through the Gorge. With their guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and stay safer on the water, snow, and trails.

But the story doesn’t end there. Temira also authors the TATAS Facebook page – the Gorge’s premier source for microclimate forecasts. When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today's snow forecast visualization
“Sun-sational news, shredders! While temps are staying toasty through mid-December, that rain forecast is pulling a disappearing act. Expect bluebird skies and spring-like temps hitting near 50°F this weekend. The mountain’s sporting perfect hardpack, and overnight cooling’s keeping our snowpack from doing a total meltdown. Nordic fans, heads up – that inversion’s keeping things chilly down low at 20°F! ” – Claude’s Over-the-Top Forecast Summary

Hi skiers and snowboarders! Temps on the mountain stay too warm for snow through (probably) the next couple of weeks, but the moisture previously forecast is slowly fading from the picture. It’s not totally gone, but the predicted quantity of rain is on a downward trend. So, we’re mostly looking at sunny, warm weather on the slopes. Thanks to radiational cooling overnight, the snowpack should be somewhat protected from melting. It’s a good thing we received so much snow so early!

Looking at Friday, we’ll have a few high clouds this morning and clear, sunny weather in the afternoon. Don’t forget your November sunscreen. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ all day and 8000′ after midnight with temps in the mid 30s on the slopes. Noteworthy news: below the inversion, it’s chilly – Teacup was reporting 20F to start the day. Snow conditions: gorgeous hardpack. Wind today: W 15-25 in the morning fading to light/variable in the afternoon.

Starting Saturday, the weather’s basically on repeat for much of the week: warm, sunny, and not very windy at all. Saturday’s specifics include a partly high overcast start and a clear finish. The free air freezing level rises from 8000′ in the morning to 11,000′ after midnight. Temps start in the mid 30s and rise to nearly 50 degrees. Wind: variable to 10mph. The forecast is exactly the same for Sunday minus the high clouds. Ditto on Monday. And Tuesday. And… you get the picture. Models suggest we might see some rain at the end of next week, but they’re far from unanimous in this proposition.

Looking even deeper into the future, both the Euro and the GFS think temps will cool around the 14th, but that 1) a long way out for precision and 2) a prediction that still contains a LOT of range, only some of which has us cold enough for snow. In the meantime… get out there and enjoy the sunshine!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! After a brief bout of light westerlies today (probably not enough even for Tre), we’ll fall into the east wind soup for a week or so. And you’ll be wanting to eat that soup, because the Nothing will hang around Hood River, but the easterly zone will have sunshine. For Friday, pressures started at 30.30/30.26/30.26 for light onshore wind. Models give us a shot at a couple hours of 10-13 (if we’re lucky) from Viento to Swell before the wind drops below 10mph. River flow over the last 24 hours is 82-156kcfs, river temp is 50.0F, and high temp forecast is 45F.

Stronger, but not yet strong, easterlies arrive on Saturday. Iwash (Rooster) Rock starts at 25, drops to 20 late morning, and builds back to 25 in the afternoon. Stevenson start at 10-15, rises to 20, and holds into the afternoon. High temp: 44F and sunny in the windy zones. Sunday’s the easterly day you’ve been waiting for. Iwash starts with 45mph and slowly fades to 35-40. Stevenson starts with 30-35 and slowly fades to 25mph. You know how this works: morning wind is the strongest wind. High temp: 43F and sunny in the windy zones. Easterlies of some sort (probably) stick around all next week. Stay safe out there, and keep an eye on your buddies. Dress warm. Wear a PFD. Have fun!

Cycling Update

It’s wet and muddy out there. Please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.

Make Today Awesome!

Whether you’re shredding fresh powder on Mt. Hood, surfing swell on the Columbia, or just enjoying our stunning home… remember that every day here is a gift. Make the most of it.

Have an absolutely epic day out there!
