Meet Temira,
your Gorge and Mt. Hood forecaster

Temira with a giant pumpkin at Mt. Hood and Columbia Gorge

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of what the Gorge has to offer: riding river swell on a foil or windsurf board, carving fresh lines through the snow, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

That’s why in 2006, Temira took it upon themselves to create the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Inaccurate predictions had left too many fellow adventurers caught off-guard and in harm’s way. Temira was determined to change that. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and travelers through the Gorge. With their guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and stay safer on the water, snow, and trails.

But the story doesn’t end there. Temira also authors the TATAS Facebook page – the Gorge’s premier source for microclimate forecasts. When winter storms, extreme heat, or other hazardous conditions (avalanches on SR-14 and I-84, for example!) threaten, this community lifeline becomes a vital resource for locals and visitors alike, helping to keep everyone safe.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today's snow forecast visualization
“Bundle up for bluebird bliss! Perfect hardpack awaits with expanded terrain – Mile open at T-Line and Cascade ready to rip at Meadows. Sun’s sticking around through Turkey Day with temps flirting with freezing. Weekend brings spring-like vibes as mercury climbs to the 40s. Long-range forecast hints at potential rain around the 5th, but hey – we’re playing with house money on this early-season snowpack! ” – Claude’s Over-the-Top Forecast Summary

Hi skiers and snowboarders! It’s a darn good thing we’ve got a solid snowpack on the ground so we can have lots of terrain. Timberline will have the Mile open today, and Meadows is opening Cascade. Down in the Nordic zones, not everything is groomed, but there are lots of kilometers ready for you. Today’s snow: perfect, stellar, amazing hardpack. Get some!

Wednesday will be a sunny day on the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 1500′. Temps start near 20F up high and 25F down low. Max temps today: upper 20s to low 30s. Wind starts at WNW 15 and fades to 5-10 out of the west. It doesn’t get much better than this for carving up some groomers, schussing along at Nordic, or hitting parks. Have fun!

Sunshine sticks around on Thanksgiving day, but temps will be a bit warmer. The free air freezing level rises to 6500′ with max temps around 34F. We will see an inversion setting up, so the lowest slopes and the Nordic areas are likely to be colder, especially in the morning. Wind: Light and variable in the morning, WSW 10 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight. Friday looks an awful lot like Thursday: low 30s, light wind, sun. Add in high clouds for the afternoon.

By the weekend, we may see the snow starting to transform from hardpack to a more granular surface. It does take quite a bit of time to do that in late November – the sun just doesn’t have a ton of power. Anyway, slope-side temps this weekend rise to the low 40s as the free air freezing level rises to 10,000′. Wind remains light and variable, and sunscreen remains a must.

Looking way out into the future, models are hinting at a possible pattern change around the 5th. About 50% of the ensembles are on board, and the new machine learning model is all-in. This pattern change, if it happens, would keep the warmth and add precipitation, potentially significant precipitation. In other words: rain. Even if it doesn’t rain, temps look to stay warm for a couple of weeks. No complaining yet! We started ski season many weeks early – we’re all riding on bonus time. Have a fun day up there today. It’s going to be absolutely spectacular on the groom!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Andy and Kirby would tell you the next couple of days are dock starting weather. We’ll be lacking in wind, but we’ll have plenty of sun. Stronger easterlies are likely to return for the weekend. Wednesday starts with light onshore flow. Pressures at 5am were 30.38/30.34/30.33 for gradients of 0.04 and 0.01. The wind was less than 10mph everywhere. It should pick up for a few hours late morning to early afternoon: 11-14mph from Stevenson to Mosier. River flow over the last 24 hours was 81-145kcfs, river temp is 50.8F, and high temp forecast is 48F and mostly clear.

Easterly-conducive scaffolding will be in place starting Thursday, but it won’t be ready to use until Saturday. Thursday starts with E 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) and rises to 15-20 at Stevenson. You’ll need to be quick. By late morning, the wind drops to 15mph at both places. It keeps falling through the afternoon. High temp: 43F under sunny sky in the windy zone. Friday starts calm, maybe picks up to 10mph at Stevenson, and doesn’t do anything more than that. High temp: 45F and sunny after a Nothing start. Looking at the weekend: high pressure settles inland and nudges the wind strength up: 30-35mph is the call for Saturday and Sunday. Monday might equal that, but models suggest it’ll be a bit lighter. Highs will be in the 40s. That’s all for now. Have fun out there!

Cycling Update

It’s wet and muddy out there. Please don’t ride, or you’ll do significant trail damage. Then peeps have to fix your mess rather than building new trails. Nobody wants that! Everyone wants new trails. Be a good steward, and pick a different activity

Remember: E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.

Make Today Awesome!

Whether you’re shredding fresh powder on Mt. Hood, surfing swell on the Columbia, or just enjoying our stunning home… remember that every day here is a gift. Make the most of it.
