Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! West flow of some sort continues through the weekend, but not all of those days will be windy enough to get you on the river. Models still don’t agree on whether today (Wednesday) or tomorrow will be the windiest; there are weather systems moving through both days, and that makes forecasting quite tricky. A return to high pressure Friday and Saturday leaves us with light wind. It’s possible we’ll see some wind on Sunday, but it’s also possible it’ll be pouring rain!

Wednesday started with pressures of 30.02/29.95/29.92 for westerly gradients of 0.07 and 0.03. Offshore: high pressure to the south and a low moving in to BC. Aloft: 30-35 knots at 700mb. Why is all that important? Well, it helps predict what’s going on. That said, we have a weather system moving through today, and sometimes that leads to impossible-to-predict wind. So, let’s say we’ll have a period of 17-20 from Viento to Swell or maybe Mosier this morning ahead of the weather system. As it moves farther inland, areas west of Lyle will slowly drop to 11-14. Between Lyle and Arlington, westerlies pick up to gusty 23-26 this afternoon. Now, models do say the western Gorge will drop, but sometimes it will rebound post-frontal. So, keep an eye on the Hatch this afternoon when the sky starts clearing. River flow over the last 24 hours was 59-76kcfs, river temp is 64.04F, and high temp is 60F.
Thursday sees another weather system move inland. Ensembles forecast stronger wind in the eastern Gorge than Wednesday, but the deterministic GFS has it less windy. All the models agree on atmospheric instability; that’s going to affect wind quality, and it’ll also make for shower potential all the way out into the desert. The day starts light. The wind slowly builds to gusty 20-23 from Viento to Avery. It then drops to 11-14 from Stevenson (rainy) to Mosier and rises to gusty 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus. As of right now, it appears the wind will be less, perhaps quite a bit less, at Arlington. High temp: 55F with showers.

High pressure returns on Friday and shuts down the wind. Or maybe doesn’t complete shut it down, but “light” sees like an apt descriptor. High temp will be 58F under partly cloudy sky early and high overcast sky later.

Extended: Light west wind is in the cards on Saturday, and it almost certainly won’t be enough to get you out playing wind sport games. Sunday looks windier, but it also has the potential to be impacted by a weak Pineapple Express / atmospheric river. In other words, it’ll probably be wet. That’s all for now. Have a great day today!

Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel – it’s fire season. Please see the HRATS/Hood River County for complete details on Post Canyon closures. Newly reopened in Post: lower Trail 100 paralleling the lower part of Post Canyon Road. The Twin Tunnels Trail between Hood River and Mosier has reopened. Kreps and Green Diamond Lands have reopened. That includes Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood. Closed: Gorge 400 and lots of other trails due to the Whisky Creek Fire. Trail near Mt. Adams due to the Williams Mine Fire. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
