Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! It’s definitely feeling like fall out there – glare on the water when it’s sunny, cool mornings, a forecast that contains both east wind and west wind. We’ll see some back and forth over the next few days. That’s followed by a plunge into more active weather starting on Wednesday. Accompanying the incoming weather is the possibility of a stronger west wind day on Wednesday – models aren’t agreeing on the details, but they do agree that we’ll see a return to west wind and that the focus will likely be east of The Dalles.

Sunday starts mostly sunny all the way from the metro area to the desert. Gradients at 7am were 30.12/30.11/30.10 – weakly onshore, westerly. The wind slowly builds today as the heat low moves east and a weak system moves inland. Morning wind maxes out at 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell, maybe to Hood River. Early afternoon sees the wind build to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River. To the east: still calm. Wait until mid to late afternoon, and you’ll find gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to Avery, strongest between Lyle and Doug’s. Rufus picks up to 13-16 in the evening, and Arlington may rise to 10mph or so. River flow over the last 24 hours was 89-95kcfs, river temp is 66.92F, and high temp forecast is 78F.
High pressure rebuilds across the PNW on Monday leaving us with little gradient. Wind will be weakly onshore, perhaps 10-13mph between Viento and Swell, early in the morning. There’s some chance of a brief period of 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River for a couple hours midday before the wind drops, but don’t count on it. The wind goes dead calm in the evening. High temp: 80F and muggy.

East wind is forecast on Tuesday. The day starts with warmer temps on the west side than in the desert. This sets up 20-25mph at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 15-20 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. That’s the peak. Get it early. The wind slowly fades. By early afternoon, it’ll be 10mph or less at all the usual east wind spots. Afternoon and evening heat, nearly 90 degrees, shuts the wind off and leaves us dead calm at sunset.

Extended: models finally agree on the extended period, at least on the general picture. It looks active. A system approaches Wednesday. This sets us up with cool air on the west side and hot weather out east. About 80% of the Euro ensembles give us 30mph average or better from Rufus to Arlington. Fingers crossed they remain optimistic. Very active weather persists through the end of next week. It looks perhaps a bit too active for reliable wind – model don’t show anything promising for Thursday or Friday at this point. That’s all for now. Have a great day today!

Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel – it’s fire season. Please see the HRATS/Hood River County for complete details on Post Canyon closures. Newly reopened in Post: lower Trail 100 paralleling the lower part of Post Canyon Road. The Twin Tunnels Trail between Hood River and Mosier is closed due to wildfire. That means you, all of you who’ve been riding it. Kreps and Green Diamond Lands have reopened. That includes Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood. Closed: Gorge 400 and lots of other trails due to the Whisky Creek Fire. Trail near Mt. Adams due to the Williams Mine Fire. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
