Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! As you can tell by looking at the clouds outside your window, something’s changed out there. Cool air has arrived aloft, and it’ll stick around for much of the next week. Despite this, we’ll hold on to just enough thermal gradient across the Cascades to keep the wind going, and we’ll also have offshore high pressure for a good portion of this period. That’ll help the wind too. With the weather this active, predicting the wind, especially several days in advance, gets tricky. I’ll do my best for you!

Wednesday starts with a low pressure system moving towards the Washington coast. As it and its accompanying front move inland this afternoon, the wind will pick up some. West of Lyle, the wind stays at 7-10mph or less all day long. Not much happens this morning in the eastern Gorge either. Afternoon sees the desert heat and the wind slowly increase: we’ll start the afternoon with 17-20ish from Rufus to Boardman. As clouds burn back, the wind rises to 20-23 from Lyle to Threemile with Boardman at 17-20. Keep in mind that those eastern Gorge sensors tend to read high compared to Swell/Hatch – this forecast predicts to the sensors. River flow over the last 24 hours was 66-124kcfs, river temp is 69.44F, and high temp forecast is 68F for Hood River and 71F for Arlington.
We’ll have quite the marine layer to start Thursday. Other good news: increasing (but still rather weak) offshore high pressure and hotter weather in eastern Washington, especially to the north. The day starts with 11-14 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 20-23 from Avery to Threemile. The wind drops to 10mph or less west of The Dalles in the morning and rises to 25-28 from Avery to Boardman. As clouds burn off, westerlies rise to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier, 22-25 from Lyle to Doug’s, and 27-30 from Avery to Threemile. High temp: 68F for Hood River and 73F for Arlington.

Not much happens on Friday: 11-14 all morning long from Stevenson to Hood River with lighter wind to the east. Afternoon heating in the desert drives the wind up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. East of there: light and variable or light westerlies. High temp: 73F for Hood River. Arlington: 76F.

Extended: the ensembles for Saturday bring a decent chance of mid-20s or a bit more for the eastern Gorge. Lesser wind is forecast on Sunday, perhaps upper teens to low 20s. We start to see more range in the possibilities for Monday and Tuesday. That said, about 50% of the ECMWF ensemble members like the idea of a big day in the eastern Gorge on Tuesday. They also call for some rain that day which could complicate the picture. I have something scheduled that day at an inconvenient time for a Rufus mission. I’m going to change it just in case. Enjoy the clouds and cooler weather today – have a great day!

Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel. Fire or fire danger closures: Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, most of Post Canyon, Gorge 400, trails around Mt. Adams. Dog River is closed for logging and rerouting until mid-September. Open: 44 Road Trails, Ape Canyon, Lewis River, Falls Creek, Columbia Hills, Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, Siouxon, Sandy Ridge. Twin Tunnels reopened for a day or two, and then it closed again – I have photo evidence to prove this! Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
