Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Things look decidedly not-summery out there this morning with light/variable conditions on the water and a Nothing cloud aloft. Don’t worry. We’ll see westerlies today and Monday and Tuesday (but not Sunday). After that, models insist on warmer weather. Depending on the location of the hottest temps, we could see westerlies, and we could see easterlies. We could even see the direction switch each day! This time of year, as the desert cools more than the metro area overnight, we tend to see easterlies in this setup.

Saturday starts with the Oregon and Washington interior wallowing in a surface low. This shifts east today. As it does, westerlies pick up. Not much happens this morning – a slow build to 7-10mph from Stevenson to Arlington is all we’ll see. Early afternoon looks to bring 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 14-17 from Avery to Arlington. Areas west of Lyle drop to 10-13 mid-afternoon. Somewhere between Lyle or Avery, and extending to Rufus, we’ll have 21-24 this afternoon. Arlington: 18-21. Threemile: 10-13. Get the wind prior to 5pm. Models knock it way down in the evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 87-108kcfs, river temp is 69.44F, and high temp forecast is 70F.

Weak ridging builds inland on Sunday. Expect light west wind, under 10mph, all day long, all through the Gorge. High temp: 75F under partly cloudy sky. Consider going mountain biking instead – the dire should be excellent right now after all the recent rain. And remember that Wylde Wind and Water has a free intermediate wingfoil clinic at the Event Site for anyone who identifies as female.

High pressure moves east, and a weak weather system approaches on Monday. Behind that system, offshore high pressure rebounds into the “strong” zone. Will it do it early enough to drive the wind above 20mph average? Probably. The day starts calm. Not much happens in the morning – just a slow build to 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell. As the system moves in, westerlies rise to gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to Arlington. If we get lucky, the system will swing through early enough, high pressure will rebuild strong enough, and we’ll finish the day with a 21-24mph executive session from Stevenson to Arlington.

Extended: models do not agree on Tuesday’s wind. The deterministic GFS is lackluster, but the ensembles of the Euro are more optimistic. Given the overall setup (strong offshore high pressure) there’s a decent shot at a decently strong afternoon session. Beyond Tuesday, models build ridging inland and turn the flow easterly. This isn’t guaranteed yet, but it’s the most likely scenario. While the range of possible temps is relatively narrow through next Saturday, it increases next Sunday. It’s likely to stay warm (and thus probably easterly), but it’s really impossible to predict accurately that far out. Have a great day on the river today!
