Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Despite a decent gradient this morning, most of today will be a rest day. Ditto for tomorrow on the rest day part of the equation. Friday looks potentially just windy enough to get some folks on the water. If you’re not available to play until the weekend, you’re in luck: it looks like the wind will return on Saturday and stick around for quite a while. Not only will it be windy, it’ll be cooler starting Monday. Yay! Oh, before I forget, I might take tomorrow off. It’s been a long time since I had a free morning, and with a rest day in the cards and decent clarity about Friday, it’s good timing!

Wednesday morning gradients at 8am (I slept in today!) were 30.15/30.09/30.12 for gradients of 0.06 and E0.03. An hour ago, it was 30.15/30.06/30.06 – inland pressure is building, and that’ll result in not-much wind today despite a cloudy morning in the metro area and decent high pressure offshore. Viento was holding around 20mph early – get that right now. It’ll soon be gone. We’ll see 10-13ish from Stevenson to Doug’s this morning, but the wind will turn calm east of Hood River before you can say, “The wind will turn calm east of Hood River”. Models keep westerlies at 10ish mph from Stevenson to Swell for the rest of the day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 88-158kcfs, river temp is 70.34F, and high temp forecast is 93F.

Thursday’s the rest day you’ve been looking for! The day starts calm. Easterlies pick up to 15-18mph from Stevenson to Viento for a few hours before dropping to 10mph in the afternoon. Easterlies will be 5-10mph in the afternoon from Hood River to Lyle. East of Lyle, all the way to Boardman, easterlies pick up to 0-13mph. High temp: 94F.

Friday sees the heat low shift east of the Cascades. This brings back the westerlies. A trough moving inland destabilizes the atmosphere. Expect unreliable, up-and-down wind. The day starts with 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell. Afternoon westerlies build to 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. East of there: light.

Extended: instability lingers on Saturday, but the wind picks up to 20mph or so between Stevenson and Doug’s. Less agreement is present beyond Saturday; the deterministic GFS calls for a big Corridor day on Sunday followed by moderately big days Monday and Tuesday. The ensembles have coalesced around a decent eastern Gorge day on Monday. Fingers crossed for that. It’s been way too long since I had Amayah’s food in my belly! Stay cool out there today!
