Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends. A windy day is on tap. Jump on it. The next couple of days (Wednesday and Thursday) don’t look very windy at all. Models hint at westerlies returning on Friday at 15-20mph and sticking around in some form for the long haul. Before I forget: the Sheriff will begin ticketing illegally parked cars today. You must get your car all the way off the road, outside of the white line. Those of you without a placard who’ve been parking in handicapped spots (those with a blue square and wheelchair painted on the ground)… first off, really? Second, that’s a $250 ticket starting today. Just don’t. Those spots are for people who actually need them, and yes, there are people who need them who park at the Hatch and participate in wind sports.

Tuesday kicked off cool and windy right from sunrise. Unfortunately, there are no marine clouds in Portland, so we won’t have that support. Pressures were 30.14/29.99/29.93 for gradients of 0.15 and G18-220.06. That suggests you’ll have a lot of options, not just the Hatch today. But the Hatch is where it’ll be at early: 24-27 from Viento to Hood River to be exact. To the east (Rowena to Arlington), the day started at 17-20. Ditto in Stevenson. By mid-morning, you’ll find 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier. Lyle to Rufus fills in at 27-30 (Rufus and Arlington read high compared to other spots, so keep that in mind) early afternoon, and Arlington won’t be far behind. Threemile: 22-25. Models suggest we’ll lose 3-5mph everywhere after 5pm, but that still equals “windy”. Thanks to the lack of marine clouds, the Swell-Hatchery zone is likely to fall to gusty 18-22 this afternoon. If it does, it’ll be easy to find wind somewhere else. River flow over the last 24 hours was 98-163kcfs, river temp is 70.88F, ,and high temp forecast is 82F for Hood river and 90F for Rufus.
High temps spike from the west to the east on Wednesday, and that knocks the wind way down. As of this morning, the forecast calls for 11-14 from Viento to Swell early with less than 10mph for the rest of the day. High temp: 93F.
Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.
Thursday looks even hotter. There’s a decent chance we’ll switch to easterly for part of the day. Expect calm wind early. Easterlies pick up to 10-13mph from Stevenson to Arlington (less from Swell to Mosier) midday before turning calm or even very light westerly in the evening. High temp: 94F.

Extended: Models suggest the heat low will return to the desert (where it belongs) on Friday. This brings back west wind. As of this morning, mid-teens are forecast for Friday, gusty 20ish mph for Saturday, and stronger wind Sunday through Wednesday. Let’s leave it there for now. I got some paddling to do. Have a great day on the river!
