Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! It’s been quite the stretch of west wind. I didn’t count, but it’s been long. We’ll break that string this week with at least a couple days that are too light to get most of you on the river. Moderate westerlies return Friday (probably) and stick around through the weekend (probably). Also here for the weekend: heat, humidity, and instability.

Tuesday kicks off post-frontal in the wake of yesterday’s system. Another weak system swings through today but doesn’t do much to help the wind. Offshore pressure isn’t all that strong, and cool air extending to the east will limit thermal assistance. Early pressures were 30.00/29.95/29.91 for gradients of 0.05 and 0.04. Westerlies started the day at 10-13 most places. Viento and Rufus were a bit stronger with 14-17 and periods of 17-20. Models suggest that’s about all we’ll see today: 10mph or so west of Mosier for most of the day, 10-13 near Mosier, and 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus. East of Rufus: 10-13. River flow over the last 24 hours was 110-175kcfs, river temp is 70.16F, and high temp forecast is 77F under partly cloudy sky.
Even less wind is in the cards on Wednesday (unless you head to the coast). The day starts with 10-13 near Viento and possibly at Swell. Models suggest 10-13 until late morning from Stevenson to Swell before the wind drops to 5-10 and stays there for the rest of the day. From Hood River eastward, the wind will be calm or nearly so. High temp: 87F under clear sky.

Easterlies pop up for a few hours on Thursday. You’ll find 15mph or so from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento for a few hours in the morning. Get on it if you want it. By the afternoon, conditions will be calm and near 100 degrees. That’s great weather for dock starting and flat water paddle ups.

Extended: the heat low shifts east of the Cascades on Friday. Westerlies return. There’s still a fair bit of range in the models, but it does look like we’ll see 20ish mph on Friday. A system on Saturday turns the overall picture chaotic and unstable, but west wind continues. Westerlies of some sort are in the cards for Sunday, but again, there’s not enough clarity in the models for a precise forecast. We’ll leave it there for now. Have a great day today!
