Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! We’re on tap for a couple more breezy days in the Gorge. Before we jump in, here’s the fire closure recap for this morning: Rock Creek (Mosier) remains in a level 2/3 evac zone. I received another text from a Mosier city official last night expressing concerns about water sports folks causing disruptions with helicopter water scooping operations. Folks, there’s no reason to be recreating at Mosier right now. Go elsewhere. Would you enter a Level 2/3 evac zone to do anything else? No? There are lots of other places to play! Try them out. Avery is now under a Level 2 evac (it was level 3 last night) due to the new Horsethief Lake Fire. Roosevelt has been downgraded to Level 1 evac, and SR-14 has reopened.

Sunday’s wind feels the influence of an offshore low approaching BC (seeking Cheezies, of course) and an associated front approaching OR/WA. To start, we had marine clouds all the way to Hood River and pressures of 29.95/29.85/29.79. Math… gradients were 0.10/0.06 to start the day. The approaching system will knock down the ability of the offshore high to lend a hand. That said… we’ll see 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier this morning with 10-13 east to Arlington to start. Westerlies quickly rise to 15-18 from Lyle to Arlington and hold for a while. Late in the morning or early in the afternoon, the approaching weather system starts to impact our wind. At this point, we’ll see the Hatch drop to gusty 16-19 while Stevenson-Mosier holds at 20-23ish. From mid-afternoon, areas between Lyle and Rufus rise to gusty 24-27. East of there to Threemile, the wind rises to 20-23. River flow over the last 24 hours was 96-183kcfs, river temp is 70.52F, and high temp forecast is 77F.

That weather system we talked about in the Sunday forecast swings through on Monday. The day starts per-frontal and clear with 20-23 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. A few hours after sunrise, clouds pour into the Gorge. When this happens, the wind drops to gusty 13-16 under the clouds, which probably means from Stevenson to Mosier. From Lyle to Rufus, we’ll see gusty 22-25 from late morning on. Arlington maxes out around 18-21.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

That system swings through Monday evening and is followed by a weaker one on Tuesday. Tuesday’s wind looks weaker too: 7-10 to start. Not much more is forecast; max wind looks to be about 12-15 from Mosier to Rufus with less everywhere else.

Temps start to warm on Wednesday, and the wind, disliking heat, leaves. Actually, the wind hasn’t generally shut off with heat this year, and the hottest weather (scheduled for next weekend) should continue that pattern. Back to Wednesday: somewhere in the 12-15 range, probably. Thursday starts light/variable. Evening thermals are possible at 15-18. We start to see more range in the forecasts towards the end of next week, but westerlies of some sort are likely. That’s all for now. Have fun out there today!
