Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Another windy day is on tap here in the Gorge. Ditto for Friday. Lesser wind, but maybe just enough, is in the cards for Saturday, but you might want to take a rest day. Sunday and Monday both look massive, and westerlies are forecast all next week thanks to (finally) cooler weather.

Thursday kicks off clear and sunny all the way from the metro area to the desert. Scheduled today: a weak weather system moving towards us and a weak, broad low off the coast. In the desert: enough heat low to keep things going. Pressures were 30.09/29.97/29.94 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.03 as I was writing this. Westerlies quickly build to 21-24 from Viento to Mosier for a couple hours this morning before that incoming system impacts us. The wind then drops to gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Rufus. Afternoon westerlies will be gusty 18-22 between Stevenson and Mosier with 16-19 at Swell. Between Lyle and Arlington, you’ll find gusty 24-27. River flow over the last 24 hours was 99-237kcfs (110-237 at Rufus), river temp is 70.52F, and high temp forecast is 89F for Hood River and triple digits for the desert.
That weak system moves through overnight and drags in a little marine air to the metro area. Offshore, another system will be moving around. Thanks to that marine air, we should see a brief 20-23mph dawn patrol from Viento to Mosier with 14-17 east to Arlington. Areas east of Mosier drop off to 10-13 by mid-morning while the Stevenson to Mosier zone fills in at gusty 17-21 (lower at Swell, higher elsewhere). Afternoon wind rises to 21-24 from Lyle to Rufus and holds. West of there: 16-19ish. High temp: 90F near Hood River and 101F in the desert.

Extended. It’s a heck of an extended forecast! The cooldown starts for the west side on Sunday, and high pressure rebuilds offshore. With temps forecast to be nearly 110 degrees in the desert, we’ve got a big day on tap. The start will be unremarkable. Don’t worry. The afternoon-evening forecast is 30+ from Stevenson to Rufus. Monday looks even windier. We’re aiming for the biggest gradients we’ve seen so far this year. Nuking westerlies extend from Stevenson all the way to Threemile and perhaps Boardman. Tuesday looks lighter, but still windy. Ensembles generally call for west wind next week with lots of variety (for now) in the details. If you like big days, make sure you’re well rested for Sunday and Monday. See ya on the river!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. As of 6/30, Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
